AN: the first 2 paragraphs of this chapter is a poem called ' winter swans ' by owen seers but with a few words changed. i wanted to use it because i thought it went well with the idea of having a nice sunny day and taking a walk together near a lake to figure out what was happening between them.
————————————————-the clouds had given their all- two days if rain and then a break, in which we walked. the waterlogged earth gulping for breath at our feet as we skirted the lake, silent and apart. until the swans came and stopped us with a show of tipping in unison. as if rolling weights down their bodies to their heads. they halved themselves in the dark water, icebergs of white feathers paused before returning again like boats righting in rough weather.
" they mate for life " george spoke up as they left, porcelain over the stilling water. i smiled as a reply as we moved on through the afternoon light. slow stepping in the lake's shingle and sand- i noticed our hands, that had somehow, swum the distance between us and folded, one over the other. intertwining our fingers like a pair of wings settling after flight.
we sat down next to each other, hands still intertwined. i laid on my back and looked up at the clouds, he copied. " what are you doing " he asked. " cloud watching, similar to star gazing only you just watch for shapes and outlines in the clouds instead of constellations in the aligned stars " i replied, as i pointed up to the sky. " look! it's a baby elephant!" i continued excitedly. " you're mental " he chuckled.
he turned on his side to look at me as i continued to point up to the sky and tell him the things i could see. i saw him smile as i cooed at a cloud that looked like a little piglet. " hey, look at me " george said as i turned to my side, following his ask. " what's going on between us? like all that happened the other night, did it mean anything to you?" he asked, looking into my eyes. my hand reached over to his face as i ran my finger across his jaw and up to the back of his neck, scratching it lightly. i saw him relax at my touch. " george, i don't know whats happening between us. but what happened the other night, in the rain, it was amazing and i loved it " i replied as i sighed. a smile lit up his face.
" will you go to the christmas ball with me?" he blurted, interrupted the silence as i stayed playing with his hair, his head now in my lap as i sat up looking over the lake. " yes " i replied, quickly. " oh, that's okay, i knew you wouldn't- wait, yes?" he asked again, seemingly suprised. " yes " i repeated, smiling as he sat up to face me. the afternoon sun behind me reflected onto his beaming face, lighting up his brown eyes, revealing his little freckles that were scattered across his entire face, his bright orange hair ruffled up. " should we try it? " he interrupted my thoughts. " i'm sorry?". " will you go out with me? you know just try it and then if we want we could become official?" he continued. " yeah, let's do it " i replied. he tackled me into a hug and laid on top of me. we both laughed and i started playing with his hair again and kissing his forehead.
" we best get back for dinner, everyone will be wondering where we got off to " george spoke, holding his hand out for me to take. we walked back hand in hand, enjoying each other's company. " so, i don't want this to make us awkward or anything- but, can we keep this between us? just for now! and then if everything goes well we can officiate it at the ball?" he continued. " that's fine " i replied.
