After that day, the dying embers within her were lit up with a new flame. Kuina no longer wanted to die.
She knew it was foolish; she would be better off dead. This world was full of danger, and malicious people everywhere would seek for her power. Yet, everytime she thought she should die, Itachi's words would ring in her head as if they were strong hands pulling her back.
Find an incentive and live.
She didn't know what her incentive was. All she knew was that she wanted to eat nice meals and see what the sunset looked like outside of the hibiscus field. Besides, in her life, she had yet to see the ocean waves, the snow fall, or the cherry blossoms as they bloomed and wilted through the season.
She had yet to see life.
She knew she was the only Fragrance left within this world, so no matter how much she wanted to cry, missing her parents and her clan, she knew no one would be there for her. The only thing she could do was toughen up and look forward to a new dawn.
So, with that thought, she complied with Itachi and Kisame. At every meal, she would gobble down every last bite, no longer being stubborn and wanting death.
The two men were rarely seen in the inn. They would bring her meals every morning and evening, and disappear for the rest of the day and night.
It must have been around a week since she was captured and put in the inn. And during that time, she rarely talked to her two captors. Apart from Kisame's taunts when they drop by, they never interact; Uchiha Itachi wouldn't even utter a greeting.
And as things were looking on the better side, in the middle of the second week of her stay at the inn, she woke up in the evening to antagonising pain.
Every inch of her scorched like it was on fire, to the point that tears would form in her eyes. She would bite down onto her blanket and clench her fists until her nails dig into her skin in order to stop herself from writhing and moaning in pain.
But that wasn't the worst thing. What was worse than her pain was the fact that that evening, Itachi and Kisame, for some reason, didn't leave her alone after they delivered her dinner like usual. She didn't say anything to it, not daring to nor have the energy.
Itachi sat against the wall right by the door, across from her sleeping mattress. Kisame, on the other hand, laid his mattress opposite hers as if he were ready to settle down in this room.
Kuina lay still on her mattress, staring out the window and at the moonless night sky, trying her best to ignore their presence. Holding in her pain had already made her whole body tensed as a stick. Now, with the two captors watching her sleep, her body was rigid like ice.
As she closed her eyes, trying to fall asleep, she heard Kisame softly talking with Itachi, "Are you really not going to sleep? I can get your mattress here for you," Kisame murmured.
"I will keep watch," Itachi replied.
Kisame let out a sigh. "Why are you so negligent with your health? You haven't slept for days fighting the Leaf. You should know the state of your own stamina better than anyone else," he reprimanded. "Besides, the Leaf doesn't know we are keeping the Fragrance in this inn. They can't possibly track us here and capture her from us. We have already decided to stay right in this room, the enemy can't possibly sneak up on us without our notice."
"You get some sleep, Kisame, if you see the need to complain," Itachi mumbled beneath his breath, almost inaudibly.
"See, you're being stubborn again. If you insist on having someone keep watch, I'll keep watch for you," Kisame spoke as he finished putting the sheet on the mattress. He patted the mattress, gesturing at it. "Here, sleep here, I'll take your place."
Itachi grumbled something under his breath that Kuina couldn't hear before speaking, "Fine, I will rest. But you take the mattress. I'm already comfortable with this wall."
Kisame let out another sigh. "Alright then. If you sense any enemy near, alert me and I'll take care of it." He yawned and lay down against the mattress, closing his eyes. "I'm a heavy sleeper, so perhaps just kick me awake like you always do," he added.
"Hn," Itachi responded quietly before he, too, closed his eyes and leaned back against the wall.
Kuina was left wide awake on her own. The pain prevented her from falling asleep no matter how hard she tried. Sweat covered her whole body as she flipped and turned throughout the night. The next time she checked, it was already two o'clock in the morning. Her eyes hung heavy, tears pooling in them.
Just when she thought that she didn't want to die, why did she have to experience so much pain? Itachi told her she was given a second chance at life, and right then, she didn't want that second chance taken away from her. She might have wanted to die before, but she had already come to embrace life. She just wanted to live.
Tears slid down her face as a sob croaked out of her throat. Why was she feeling so much pain? She groaned as she tried to sit up, but in vain. In the end, she ended up, laying still on her back, completely paralysed.
And as she struggled against her agony, her hazy gaze came in contact with Itachi's. He was awake as he looked at her with his dark eyes that illuminated like the moon amidst the moonless sky.
