Prognosis
"It has nothing to do with what I 'want'. I 'can't'. And if I give a damn about you, I won't."
____________________________Prognosis, the forecast of the likely outcome of a situation, or an opinion based on medical experience, of the likely cause of a medical condition.
Sometimes, one's prognosis may be accurate. Sometimes, it may not even be close to being correct.
However, as Blue sat down at the beer garden of Donahue's waiting to start her second year of practising medicine, she would have never imagined nor predicted all the events that she would face in the next several months to come.
The clock ticked, time draining away. Blue narrowed her eyes, brows furrowed with focus.
The second hand swept up...counting down the precious last moments until...
"Midnight!" Blue exclaimed.
"We did it! Intern year is officially over!" Elijah chimed. "Good riddance." Jackie chuckled. "Wooooohoooooo" Sienna whooped in her seat. "Once again, it looks like I have perfect timing." Bryce said, setting a fresh round of beers on the outdoor table behind Donahue's, the local dive, before raising one to the group.
"To kicking ass and running Edenbrook...as second-year residents." Bryce toasted, and the group of friends took a beer each before clanking them together.
"Man intern year was really something." Blue said, taking a sip of her beer. "You're one to talk. Not only did you win the hearing and got a place in the diagnostics team as fellow, you even topped our batch in the intern exams." Elijah replied.
"Honestly, I couldn't have gotten past all of that without you guys." Blue said, looking at all her friends thoughtfully. "How many of those beers have you had?" Jackie teased her. "Just enough to spill all my emotions over on this table." Blue joked back.
"Which means, one more and we'll get her dancing. I like your new hair." Bryce said, his eyes trailing over her hair and features. Blue ran a hand through her long auburn hair. A few days back, after sending out her last letter to that one person in the Amazon, she decided that she had to move on. For good this time.
To start that off, she needed a change, and Sienna suggested dyeing her hair, and on an impulse, Blue dyed her natural caramel locks to bright auburn, which still carried hints of caramel under them, but the red-orange undertone dominated their hues.
She did not feel like herself at all in that hair colour, but she guessed that was exactly what she needed. Not to feel like herself. She needed a change, and what better way to start that process of by not feeling like the person who was or truthfully still is, head over heels with a certain aquamarine-eyed diagnostician.
"Yeah, you look like one of those girls that changed their hair colours after a break up as a coping mechanism." Jackie joked, but somehow it was befitting Blue's actual situation. Sienna threw a concerned glance at Blue while Bryce looked at her with guilty eyes. He probably felt that she was still not over him, but he failed to recognise the time gap between her feelings. After all, no one except Sienna and to an extent, Elijah, knew anything about the extra mile between Blue and a certain attending's relationship.
"Nah, just wanted a change, that's all." Blue shrugged, trying not to let her face give away anything.
"I can't believe it's only been a year since we met. It feels like we've known each other a lifetime! So much has changed already." Sienna said, deviating the topic, and Blue gave her a grateful smile. "You got that right." Elijah replied, and he could not help but glance at the seat Landry, their ex-roommate, used to occupy.
