Hopeful Hearts
"I'm saying..."
__________________________________________Blue was sprawled out on the couch of the residents' lounge, her feet exhausted from another excruciatingly long shift that she had to continue in another twenty minutes. The rest of her friends were lounging around as well, equally tired.
She took a sip of her latte, sighing almost blissfully at the caffeine she was sustaining herself with. "Looks like they finally stocked this place with some half decent coffee."
"Yeah." Jackie chuckled dryly as she made one of her own. "Just in time for the hospital to close."
"You don't know that, Jackie." Sienna replied, her tone slightly fed up with her friend's pessimistic attitude.
Jackie was about to respond, when the door to the lounge opened only to reveal Kyra who stepped inside, looking across the group with a mischievous smile.
Bryce sat up on the couch, a small making its way up his face. "Finally, someone who looks like they have good news to deliver." he said.
"C'mon Kyra. Don't leave us hanging." Elijah probed as well.
"If you're that eager..." Kyra started, her smile curling into a slight smirk. "Check your emails."
The group of friends immediately unlocked their phones and tapped into their inboxes, where they spotted an intriguing subject line...
"You are formally invited to...Edenbrook's Hopeful Hearts Gala?" Blue read out aloud for all of them.
"So...we're saving the hospital with a party?" Jackie asked, a little perplexed.
"No, we're shoring up our budget by hosting a fancy-pants fundraiser. The last karaoke gala we organised was such a hit! It was one of the main reasons why we even have the budget to run the free clinic for a few extra months. This time, we don't need a karaoke segment at all, as this is about the community, but if you guys wanna perform, be my guest as well." Kyra grinned at them, laying out her plan to them.
"Kyra, you're a genius!" Blue exclaimed, sitting up on the couch.
"'Genius' is a bit much...but who am I to disagree with one of your diagnoses?" Kyra laughed, taking a seat next to Blue.
"So...how exactly is this thing going to work? For the karaoke gala, it was donors donating after every performance, but we don't have that incentive for this one." Blue queried.
"Well, I had to call in just about any favour anyone owes me...plus a few more I made up. But somehow it all came together. We're going to hold it right in the atrium again like the previous one. And I'm already getting 'yeses' from some of the biggest names in town. The karaoke gala was just mainly rich donors from the medical industry, but we are pulling all stops for this one. This place has done so much for the community over the years. I thought they might find it in their hearts to help us when we need it. The only incentive we are going to have here is Edenbrook itself." Kyra explained.
That was when Blue realized. "The kindness of strangers..." she trailed with a knowing smile.
Kyra returned her smile along with a wink. "Exactly. You and Dr. Ramsey gave me the idea outside of your patient, Marisa's, room. I've been planning ever since." she replied.
"It's okay, Kyra. You can just admit this is a ploy to see me in a suit." Bryce grinned.
"Does anyone have some strong tape?" Jackie asked. "I wanna tape someone's mouth shut."
Bryce threw a couch cushion at Jackie who dodged it barely, making everyone laugh. Elijah's smile turned serious as he asked Kyra, "Do you really think this can raise enough money?"
