Looming Shadows

"Excellent work, Rookie."

With the looming shadow of June's revelation, and what that could actually mean for her and Edenbrook, Blue finished packing the rest of the things before heading out of the office.

It had been a terribly long day, and Blue knew that if she did not get her ass into bed within the next hour, she would drop dead from exhausion. She made her way through the hallway greeting the graveyard shift nurses politely as she walked passed them. A sad warning tugging that all these camaraderie may amount to nothing if even with all these efforts, Edenbrook shuts down.

Stifling a yawn, she entered the locker room, changing into the clothes she had worn that morning before heading out. Suddenly, her pager vibrated in her pocket.

It was Bryce, and he was paging her to Room 426. Wondering what he needed her for, she made her way there, only to see Kyra in a hospital gown on the bed with Bryce sitting next to her on a chair, his eyes fixed on...

...Breyanna, who was updating Kyra's vitals on the charts.

When Blue entered the room, Kyra looked up to meet her eyes, smiling sheepishly. Breyanna looked up too, and to Bryce's surprise the two women whom he had more than platonic feelings for, smiled at each other.

"Kyra...you've been re-admitted?" Blue asked, as with one discreet glance at Bryce, Breyanna bid them goodbye to finish up her shift. Blue caught Bryce's eyes fixated on the nurse as she left and she could not help but smile. Bryce did in fact develop feelings for Breyanna during the period they had dated, and it took a break up for him to actually realize that.

"Hello, lover boy. Focus." Kyra snapped her fingers in front of Bryce. "She has. And she's got something she wants to tell you..." Bryce said smiling as he turned back to Blue. He gave Kyra a reassuring squeeze of her hand.

"I, uh...Blue, look, I'm sorry I was such a jerk earlier." Kyra started off giving Blue a rueful smile. "You weren't a jerk. Honestly, you could take out all your anger on me if it means you'll keep fighting this." Blue replied honestly. "Well, I wasn't going to. But I changed my mind, all thanks to this glorious hunk of a man." Kyra replied squeezing Bryce's face sweetly.

"Save your praise for after the surgery." Bryce replied, giggling through his squished face. "You don't mean that." Kyra teased. "You're right, keep going." Bryce responded with a charming smirk, making Blue smile at their cute exchange. Kyra always had a way with making even the darkest of moments radiant.

Blue walked forward to sit on the edge of Kyra's bed, watching the latter shift her thin body to the side to give her more space. "So what's going on? What changed your mind?" she asked. "After you left the office with my news, I was all set to die quietly and nobly, when Bryce here had an idea of how I might be able to survive this thing after all." Kyra answered with a hopeful grin.

Blue turned to Bryce immediately as she asked with wide eyes, "How?" Heaving a deep breath, the surgical resident replied, "An extrapleural pneumonectomy." "You want to take out her lung, her diaphragm..." Blue started as she absorbed the information. "Part of her diaphragm, and the parietal pleura and pericardium on her left side. We can replace the lining of her chest and heart with Gore-Tex." Bryce explained further.

"That sounds...extensive." Blue remarked, placing a worried hand on top of Kyra's. "It is. It's radical, and it's risky, and if it works, it's gonna hurt like actual hell. And if it doesn't..." Bryce trailed. "Then I'll die." Kyra finished for him casually.

"Yeah. But it gives us a fighting chance. Your cancer is spreading so fast that we need to go big or go home. And I'll be damned if I give up on a friend." Bryce said. "How did you even think of this?" Blue asked geniunely curious. "Ramsey gave me the idea actually." Bryce replied with a knowing smirk.
