Precious Snowflake

"Why would I want to be alone when I could be with the woman I spend every night longing for?"

After a less than two hours helicopter ride, Ethan, Blue, Baz and June arrived at a beautiful, snow-blanketed ski resort that was nestled halfway up Dagger Mountain.

"Here we are." Ethan said just as the team came down from the helipad building. "Wow." Blue breathed out wistfully as she took in the surroundings.

The reflection of the morning sun on the stark white snow was glaring, and yet the ski resort stood tall in its midst, the gingerbread brown bricks of the building, coated parshly by the snow. The cold air stung her cheeks as she took in the smell of damp pine trees, allowing herself to indulge in the feeling of an actual winter wonderland, that she rarely got to experience, being in cities that were primarily tropical all throughout her life.

"Please tell me there's a moustachioed little man in there solving crimes." Baz beamed excitedly. He was wearing a grey jumper with a saffron striped vest on top, and he seemed to be just as fond of snow as Blue. "Baz, we're the moustachioed little man." June reminded, with a small shrug. Something was bothering the woman, Blue could tell, but she needed to thread carefully with her.

Ethan took in the view as well, feeling a little nostalgic of visiting the place he used to visit all the time in high school. How he used to have unadulterated fun as a teenager, the only source of escape from the reality of his childhood, the void that his mother had left just as he was transitioning to adolescence.

Even as he came here for vacation after his mother had walked out on his family, the blank canvas of snow was always bleak, though it harboured a myriad of families, happy families skiing, having fun together, while he skiied along with his father, hoping that his mother would be back at their cabin preparing two steaming mugs of hot chocolate for them as she always did when they visited the place as a family of three.

When that comfort and happiness was stripped away, the wide expanse of the bleak white snow remained as that. Just a white blank space.

He turned to see Blue taking in their surroundings with wide green eyes, her excitement evident from the way her eyes rivaled the brightness of the sun against the snow. Her hair was still in a bun, and the light snowflakes that peppered down on them gently clung to the ends of her loose strands. Her nose was flushed in a light pink from the cold and he could not be more endeared.

For a moment, the blank white canvas of the place in his heart, was splashed with bright colours, emerald, caramel, pink and blue were all splattered in that white canvas, as if the mere existence of Blue alone in that place, was enough to make the place colourful again in his eyes, just like how she had painted the colour back in his life again after twenty five years.

Ethan started to see the meaning behind the art that Evelyn, one of their patients earlier from that year, had made. From all her paintings in her gallery to the one she had made of Blue, for the first time he could sought meaning in it. His conversarion with Blue rebuking the rationality of it, all deemed useless as she managed to changed how he viewed life in just a few months since that night they had visited the gallery together.

Ethan led the group into the ski resort, helping Baz unpack the portable test equipment along the way as they reached the lodge-style-lobby. A man, who was probably in his mid-fifties, with dusky blond hair and clad in a black sweater, was waiting for them at the lobby. His eyes brightened when he saw Ethan, and he stepped forward to give the leader of the team a warm handshake.
