Wake-Up Call
"You've grown a lot since your first thoracotomy. I'm proud of you."
____________________________________A couple of weeks after that incident with Jackie, Blue was walking through the I.C.U halls, to get to her next patient.
It had been a tough few weeks, for all the staff of Edenbrook. From juggling heaps of patients to the adminstrative side working out the budget, especially after the Karaoke Gala, to try and allocate appropriate sum of money for each sectors of the hospital.
In summary, it was a workaholic's daydream and an underpaid worker's nightmare.
Blue combed her fingers through her messy ponytail, the day's work already starting to take a toll on her appearance. She had to take a breather she decided, as she headed for the residents' lounge anticipating the cup of coffee she was going to have from the coffee machine once she got there.
As she rounded the corner following the stretch down to the lounge...
...Suddenly, a loud crash startled her!
Blue immediately spun around on her sneakers, searching for the sound of the noise. She spied a variety of grieviously ill patients through the thick glass walls of their small rooms, all lying quietly in their beds. Except...
A woman, who was lying on the floor beside her hospital bed, struggling to weakly get up!
She was mocha-skinned, and her walnut brown hair was straight yet in a frizz. Her eyes were dark brown and Blue noted that they were unfocused.
Blue immediately sprang into action as she alerted the nurse, "Nurse! Help in Room 592!" Snapping on a pair of gloves, she rushed into the room and knelt at the woman's side.
"Miss, it's alright. I'm here." Blue spoke soothingly, sensing the anxiousness in the woman's dark eyes. "Do you feel pain anymore?" Blue inquired, just in case she had hurt herself anywhere. However, the woman's voice came out barely, a whisper as if she could not speak at all. "Anywhere at all. Your head? Your legs?" Blue asked again. Once again, the woman's voice came out as a murmur, barely comprehensible.
Just then, Danny rushed into room as he was the nurse who was alerted. However, he screeched to a stop when he saw the woman next to Blue, his face contorting into one of immense surprise and shock. "Holy--Stephanie! I can't believe it!" he exclaimed.
"Danny, she fell out of bed. What's her condition?" Blue asked extremely confused at the look of disbelief on Danny's face. "Her condition? You're...probably gonna wanna see for yourself." he replied handing the patient, Stephanie's, charts to her.
Blue read it...then had to read it again just to make sure that she was not imagining things. It was her turn for her bright green eyes to widen in disbelief.
"Whhhat's...haaaapppening?" Stephanie slurred out, as her grip on Blue remained when the doctor had let her use her as a support to stand up. "My name is Dr. Hunter. You're in Edenbrook Hospital, in Boston." Blue told her, reading her face for any discomfort in the news. It was a sensitive case, and she wanted to thread very carefully.
Her arms were still supporting Stephanie, who was very heavily leaning on her for support, her muscles were weak from being stagnant that even her muscle memory and reflexes were of no use. After seeing the patient a little more calm, Blue finally broke the news to her.
"Stephanie, you're been in a coma. For thirteen years."
At that very moment, Stephanie collapsed in Blue's arm, taking her down with her due to the amount of weight she had been putting on Blue.
