"Your orders will be out soon," the waiter said with a small smile.
The place was really classy. Dimmed lights, chandeliers above almost every table, seven forks and knives on each side, five different types of plates and walls full of framed certificates. This must've cost a fortune for Katie.
Katie is my best friend since about two years ago, and today, was her 19th birthday. She invited me and some school friends for dinner at this waaaay too posh restaurant.
We were all just chatting amongst ourselves, trying not to be too loud, gossiping about what people at other tables were wearing and just making small talk. My phone then started to vibrate in my purse. I took it out, and the caller ID read Mum.
"I'll be right back, I'm just going to take this call," I said to Katie. I hopped up out of my chair carefully and pushed it back.
"Hello?" I said into my phone.
"Maddy, I'm really sorry but you have to go home. Alice doesn't have her keys and they're there. Dad's studio got broken into and we won't be back that soon," my mum replied in a pleading tone.
"You've got to be joking, right?" I yelled whispered through the phone. I think it came out louder than I thought, because people from other tables were giving me weird looks.
"I'm really sorry Maddy, but you have to! Your dad and I won't be back for at least another hour and a half," Mum replied, trying to sound as nice as she could.
"Where's Alice? I thought she was at a friend's?" I asked.
Alice is my younger sister. 15 and sings. Her fame is just starting off and she's slowly creeping onto the charts, but she hasn't made it internationally yet.
"Your sister's at a friend's, she didn't take her keys because she thought we would be there in time for us to pick her up..." my mum trailed off.
"Is she actually that dumb!? Mum, that's so not fair! It's Katie's 19th birthday! She's my best friend! It's not my fault that she doesn't have her keys and that Dad's studio got broken into! I can't leave!"
"I know. It's not your fault but they're there. You can't just leave them there," my mother responded in a soothing tone that had no effect on me.
"Can't I?"
"No."
I knew I wasn't going to win this argument. And eventually, I gave in.
"Fine. But you'll owe me. Big time," I said through the phone with slight annoyance and anger in my tone.
"YAAAAAY! Now, they're at the door waiting, so you better -" and I cut her off, slamming my thumb onto the 'End Call' button. This really, was not how I expected my night to end.
I walked back over to the table after the five minute phone call, thinking how I was going to tell Katie that I had to leave. She's going to hate me forever now. Just as I was about to sit down, she was already firing questions at me.
"Hey, is everything alright? Who were you on the phone with? You seem a bit... Pissed?" She asked, trying to sound as cheery as possible.
"Katie, I'm really really really really sorry, but some family stuff had just come up and I have to go. I'm reaaaaaaally sorry, and I know you'll never forgive me, but I'll make it up to you. I'll explain everything later, I promise," I said to her, but I could tell, just by looking in her eyes that she was angry, but she still tried to remain positive as it was her birthday and all.
"Wait, so you have to go?" she said with hesitation in her voice but she still tried to remain calm.
"Yeah, I'm really sorry Katie. Look, I'll talk to you later, okay?" But before she could even reply, I stood up from the table, hugged her briefly and awkwardly, making sure I wasn't knocking down any chairs or anything and quickly said bye to everyone and left.
I didn't know why I was in such a rush. It's not like I wanted to leave. I honestly feel really bad for leaving. Alice is sooo going to pay me back for this.
I hopped in my car, just thinking. What am I going to do when I see them? Am I going to be polite and pretend to like them? Or am I just going to play the 'I don't like you, and you've ruined my night' card? I really don't know what I am going to do. Pushing my thoughts to the back of my head, I reversed out of the parking space and headed home.
After a 15 minute drive, I was back at my home. I parked my car on the driveway and I could already see them. There was also a black van parked near us as well. I'm thinking that's how they got here. I hopped out of my car and looked down at myself. Realizing that I was all dressed up, I was sure that I would get a few weird looks, and I was starting to feel a bit uncomfortable and out of place.
Nonetheless, I headed to the front door and found Alice, some bodyguard dude, and of course, One Direction. This should be an interesting night.
