*One month later*
It's been a month since I went to the cemetary. I still remember the wave of gold I saw. It hasn't left my mind. It's just been sitting at the back of my head. I've told no one about it, not even Niall. I try to not overthink it and I distract myself with college and my friends that I have bonded more with; apart from Brittany.
As every day goes by, I get closer and closer with Jenny, Rachel and Hazel, and Brittany is driven further and further away from the three of them, even though she doesn't want to.
"I'll meet you at the hall for dinner?" Brittany tried to confirm as we finished lunch and were about to head off our different ways.
"Me, Maddy, Jenny and Hazel are going out for dinner tonight," Rachel answered her. "Sorry."
"Oh," she responded miserably. "Okay. Um, I hope you guys have a good time."
"Thanks."
Brittany's been trying so hard to try and feel included. The other three don't like her as much because she doesn't like me. I feel sorry for her, but it's not my fault to be honest. I gave her a chance for us to become friends but she didn't take it. I think that she wants to be friends with me but there's something stopping her or something. But I still feel like it's my fault. I feel like everything's my fault. So I decided to sort things out, because I was sick of us sharing a room and not getting along.
"Why don't you like me?" I asked her before when we were both in our room, before I was about to go out for dinner. She didn't answer me and continued reading her book.
"It's been almost two months. Did I do or say something wrong?" I continued to ask her anyway. She continued to ignore me.
"Look, we're spending so much time together, and us two not getting along isn't doing us any favours. I didn't purposely choose to be friends with your friends. I didn't know they were your friends. But us two not getting along isn't going to make our time here any better."
She put her book down and looked at me, expecting me to continue speaking.
"If I did anything wrong, I'm sorry. I just want to make our time here more enjoyable. By the looks of it, your friends are almost excluding you. I don't want to make anyone's time here horrible," I told her. I felt awkward. This was the most I've ever talked to her and it wasn't comfortable. "I just want us to start fresh and become friends."
I waited for her to say something. I watched her as she processed what I said into her head. It was like she was thinking strategically about this which was strange. She heaved a deep sigh before she spoke.
"I'm sorry for the way I acted. This is all my fault," she told me truthfully. "I would love to become friends with you," she said and gave me her first ever smile. She stood up and approached me for a hug which was surprising. I didn't think she'd be that friendly all of a sudden, but I went along with it.
"So, would you like to join us for dinner?" I asked her.
"I'd love to."

The five of us went out for dinner and it was probably the best night at college since me and Brittany finally started talking. She did look a bit uneasy, like she wanted to say something but she couldn't. But this, also, was the happiest I've seen her. I was glad that I confronted her, because now I already feel like this big weight has lifted off my shoulders. I get along with everyone at college. It was only Brittany that I didn't, but I do now.
After dinner, I went and sat at the usual bench near the courtyard alone in the dark, where I gave Niall a call every night. Talking to him is always the highlight of my day. It's the only thing I look forward to and it motivates me to get through each day quickly and to get my college work done.
He picked up after one ring.
"Hi Maddy," a different voice picked it up in a happy cheery tone. I recognised who it was straight away and a smile still crept onto my lips.
I heard Liam in the background say hi too.
"Hi Harry, and Liam," I echoed.
"How are you?"
"I'm good. Yourself?"
"I'm good, thanks."
"Is Niall there?" I asked. I didn't want to be rude but I did call to speak to Niall.
"He went out just ten minutes ago and he left his phone behind," he told me. "I'll tell him to call you back?"
"It's okay, just tell him I called."
"Okay," he answered.
I didn't want to be rude but I was tired and I wanted to go to bed.
"Hey, I've got to get some rest," I told him.
"Okay."
"Tell the others I said hi and that I miss them."
"Will do."
"Talk to you later."
"Night."
Calling Niall is really the highlight of my day. Hearing his voice makes me forget about everything and makes me feel more at home which is good because I have no family here with me. I miss Alice more than I thought I would. I miss having my annoying sister around, but I'm extremely proud of how well her music is going. I think for once, everything is actually going pretty well. Alice is going well, the boys new album is soon to be released and there's heaps of buzz about it, and I finally feel like I'm being myself here at college after breaking down that barrier with Brittany. For once, everything is well and good. It can only get better from here.
