Jay's POV
I look through the file as I sit down on my desk. It was about a women who went missing at night. They had suspects but nothing ever happened. It was an unfinished investigation. They gave up when they couldn't find her. As I start to read the report it all starts to click. "Guys I think they guy who took Hailey took this person" I say. "What?" They all ask. "Annie Bass, 31 years old, she went missing over 4 years ago but they never found a body and never arrested anyone. They believed she was abducted by random people and the last known location of her was being place in a van. The could never find any other footage so the search stopped. They had nothing to go on" I say as I read the report out loud. "This has to be our guy." I say as I look up to all of them."Okay but what does the file have to do with Hailey?" Kevin asks. "So he can't be caught" Adam says as he looks over to me. "He's already committed this crime and the police would have more evidence to go on if this has happened before" he says. "Exactly, if Hailey gave this to him he would of gotten ride of it and we would of thought this was the first time meaning there was no evidence to help" Kevin says as he understands what is happening. "Okay so either Annie is still alive or he just switched her out for Hailey and is trying to hide all evidence of her ever existing" Voight says. I nod in agreement as I walk towards him and give him the file. "So he doesn't kill his victims right away" Kevin says.
"Yeah" I sigh, I mean I thought I would be thankful that he wasn't going to kill her, don't get me wrong I am but I'm worried what else he could do to her. "He has a type, she's just like Hailey, same height, hair colour, same colour eyes and same age" Voight says as he looks through the file. "So we know that they were both tormented with a sniper and both placed in a van. That's our starting point. This should hopefully lead us to her" he says as he looks at us all. "So he stalks them, torments them and then takes them" Kevin says as he starts to write things up on the board. We all nod and then wait for instructions.
I look over and watch Voight stands up. "Right let's break this down okay. I will go see if I can find anywhere for the sniper shot around here. Maybe they left something" Voight says as he turn to look at us. "You guys focus on the driver. I want all of you guys to watch traffic cameras and find that van. Once you do follow it" Voight orders and we all rush to our desks. My head is burning with questions that I desperately need answers to, i feel like I am doing nothing to help my her and it was making me feel sick. I can't just sit here watching a stupid camera all day, I need to be out looking.
The thought of him taking advantage of her was to hard for me. It made my heart physically ache and i my fist curl so tight I thought they would snap. I need to be doing more than sitting here, I need to find her and hold her. I need to tell her I love her and that everything will be okay. Voight heads out of the bullpen and we all get to work trying to catch the van.
3 hours later
"Anything?" I ask as I look up to them. "I'm still watching the surveillance" Kim sighs as she runs her hands through her hair. "Yeah I'm still looking too" Kevin says and I nod. "I look over to the board and I realise to myself that that she has been missing for 21hrs. She was hurt and I still haven't managed to find her. I was getting desperate and impatient. My leg was bouncing and my head was pounding. I push the footage on my screen and head to the break room. I start to make myself some coffee as my mind starts to wander. It goes to our wedding day, her in the beautiful white dress. Walking towards me, bringing the light and warmth with her. Holding her in my arms and kissing her lips. Knowing that we would be together forever and no one could change it.
2 hour later
As I am staring at my screen and I interrupted by Kim. "Wait I've got something!" She shouts. My head shoots up to look at her and then I rush over to her desk. "I've got the driver of the van. I'm running facial reck now" she says as she zooms into the van's driver and highlights it. It starts to analyse his features and finally finds a match. "Okay here we are. Jonny Green, 18 years old, no priors or a recorded, last known address is his parents house." Kim says. "Okay let's go" I say as I rush back to my desk and grab my jacket. Just as I am about to put it on I hear the gate open.
I look up. "Ugh guys!" I hear Trudy call. We all see her walking up the stairs. "Someone here wants to talk to you guys. Say's it's important" she says. She turns around and a young man walks up next to her. It was Jonny. Trudy walks away and he slowly walks up towards us. I look at him and start to walk towards him. "Where is she?" I ask. He looks to me worried. "I will not ask you again. Where is she?!" I ask as I get closer. "Jay man calm down" Kevin says as he puts his arm out and blocks me from going any further.
"I-I" he panics as he looks at us all. "Here kid. Sit" Adam says as he places his chair in front of him. He sits down and we all surround him. "Where is she? We need to know. She's a cop so this is serious" I say as I place a picture of Hailey on the desk in front of him. "She's-she's a cop?" He ask worriedly. "Yes she is" Kim says. "You came here to talk to us, said it was important. What is it?" Kevin asks. He looks at the picture of Hailey and then around at all of us. I can see he looks like he wants to cry and I feel my stomach turn. He really is just a kid, a kid who looks terrified. I take a deep breath and look back at him less angry this time. "Please just help us" I say in a calm tone.
"I didn't know what was happening I swear. I was just looking for money, I needed a job." He says. "A couple of days ago I was leaving the a store after getting turned away from an interview and this guy walked up to me. He said he had a job for me and he was willing to pay $5,000 if I did it, asked no questions and told no one. He told me all I had to do was drive him to a location and that was it. But the night when I picked him up in the car park across the street he opened the side door and threw in this lady. She was bleeding real bad and wasn't awake. He zip tied her hands together and told me to drive while pointing a gun at me. I did as I was told because I was so terrified. I dropped them off at the location and he payed me. After that I drove away and that was it" he says as he looks at the ground.
He looks up to the desk and places his hand on the picture of Hailey, tracing over her face. "I'm so sorry. I didn't realise that was going on and I thought about all night about how I could have stopped it and helped her but I didn't. I was coward. I knew what I did was wrong so that's why I came here and turned myself in but I didn't realise she was cop" he says with a shaky voice. "I'm sorry" he says as he looks up to all of us. "Jonny your not to blame. Yes you should have gone to the cops right away but your not a fault. But you can still help us" Kim says. "Tell us the location that you took them too" I say.
"It was dark and I was following a GPS. It took about 20 minutes to drive a certain way. No street lights, nor cameras and no other cars." He says as he looks up to me. "Kid I'm begging you, there has to be something" I say as I look at him. He closes his eyes for a minute and then opens them. "When we arrived there was this huge open space. One large warehouse and across was a smaller shed looking thing. He made me drive up to it, he opened the door and took her out. When he opened the door there were stairs. It was like it was underground. He came back up after a few minutes gave me the cash and told me to tell no one." He says. "Was there another women anywhere around there? Or anyone that you could identify?" Kevin asks. "There were four other men from what I seen, all scary looking people who all had big guns, but they looked like they feared the guy in charge. They called him 'boss' and did everything he told them to do" he says.
"Wait. Wait. When he gave me the cash there was a white piece of paper on top that had numbers on it. I don't know how much help that will be" he says. "That good anything could help us. Do you have it?" Kim asks. "Yeah I think I-I still have the paper he gave me" he says as he fiddles in his pockets, emptying them quickly. He pulls out a small bit of paper and passes it to me. I look down at it and then up to everyone. "This isn't just numbers, it's coordinates" I say as pass it to Adam. He rushes over to Kim desk and put the coordinates in. "Got it!" He says. "Got what?" Voight asks as he appears at the top of the stairs. "Jonny you stay here okay. You have been a huge help. Sarge we got the location of Hailey" I say. "It's owned by a guy named Gordon Macker" he says. "Right let's go!" I say as I pick my jacket back up and we all rush down stairs.
*Sorry it took so long. Struggling to write this story now after hearing the news about Jesse/Jay. Absolutely heartbroken but I am also happy that he is doing what he feels is right. The show will never be the same without him and Upstead has no gone 💔*
