It was a late night back in Washington. DC yawned as he tried working on his paperwork, ready for both a nap and another cup of coffee. He signed off on another doc, before reaching for his pile, ready to grab another one.

Unfortunately luck wasn't on his side that night, because the pile collapsed on the ground.

DC let out a frustrated groan and got out of his chair to collect the papers, mumbling to himself as he went. Maybe he should've taken Washington's offer to run out and get them coffee, it'd be better then the office coffee some idiot from Oregon thought was good. DC yawned and replied the papers to put back on his desk when he frozen.

An envelope? Was that in the original papers?

DC picked up the envelope and looked back at the paper still around him on the floor. That pile had come from the Statehouse, and he couldn't remember if there was an envelope thrown in the mix when he left two days ago. DC shrugged and walked back to his desk, sitting back into his chair and starting to open the envelope. It was probably the gas bill, it was probably a good thing it slipped into the pile, he was the one who paid it.

It was odd leaving the Statehouse this time, DC thought as he fully opened the envelope. Usually his partners were all over him, either trying to get him to stay or getting him ready to go but this time....they acted like it was no big deal that he was leaving. In fact they acted almost.....cold. DC prayed that he didn't do anything bad before he left, but hoped he could make it up to them when he came back.

DC got the envelope open and pulled the papers out, surprised to see a letter instead of the gas bill. The handwriting looked like California's, which made DC's concern grow more. He must've done something bad if Cali was writing letters. The fed unfolded the paper and began to read, hoping it was a love letter instead of him being blasted for some mistake he made.

Two minutes later, IDC and Washington dashed into DC's office at the scream, to find the fed on the floor of his office, curled up in a ball crying.

"DEE WHAT'S WRONG?" IDC yelled, running over to her brother and holding him. Washington picked up the fallen letter off the floor and fast read it, eyes going wide as he reached the end.

"Holy shit. They're gone." Washington whispered.

"WHOSE GONE?" IDC demanded.

"D-DC's partners! They....they left for their individual states a day ago!" Washington explained. IDC reached over and tore the letter out of Washington's hands and quickly read it.

We're sorry. We're sorry we're causing you so much pain by doing this. But it's better for everyone if we left the Statehouse, we were never good enough for you. We've lied, we've deceived and kept things from you. We are not worthy of you.

IDC crushed the paper in her fist and threw it off as she went back to comforting her twin. Washington stood awkwardly watching the siblings as Ontario ran in.

"What the hell is going on?" Ontario yelled.

"DC's partners left the Statehouse." Washington explained.

"WHAT? Why?" Ontario gasped.

"Dee shhh....it's okay." IDC whispered, rubbing her brother's back. Ontario walked over to the twins and knelt down on DC's other side.

"Hey...hey Dee it's okay." Ontario whispered. IDC let DC fall into Ontario's arms and looked at Washington with a pointed look.

"Find them. I want those five brought back." IDC hissed. Washington gulped and hurried back to his desk. IDC looked back at her brother who sobbed into Ontario's chest.

"Go. I'll care for him." Ontario whispered. IDC nodded and hurried off after the smaller state.

"W-Why....w-what did I do?" DC whimpered.

"Sometimes....sometimes states are just like that." Ontario pointed out rubbing DC's back. "They're fickle...they don't want long term relationships."

"I....I want them back!" DC sobbed.

"I know...I know..." Ontario whispered trying to hide his smile in DC's hair. There was no excuse now. DC was his. Ontario managed to get DC to stand up with him and tried to quiet his sobs, but the fed was completely inconsolable. He briefly glanced up when he thought he heard IDC or Washington return, but was met with the quiet of the hallway leading to DC's office, save for the muffled shouting coming from IDC's office.

"It'll be alright." Ontario whispered, rubbing DC's back, not fighting his smile anymore. "You deserve better than those states anyway."

The letter, which had been completely discarded, rolled out into the empty hallway, only stopping when it hit the toe of a boot of someone standing in the doorway. From the hallway, one could see DC clutch onto Ontario's shirt and cry, trying to use all the calls Florida taught him to get his boyfriend's back.

Someone bent down and picked up the discarded letting, unraveling it and staring at it through the dim moonlight. They glanced back into the office where Ontario went back to trying to quietly comfort the fed, rocking him back and forth and whispering encouragement. It almost made one of the figures want to jump into the office to reveal themself but another held them back, shaking their head.

"No matter how bad it hurts, sha. We had to do this." The figure whispered and the smaller figure stomped his foot. Ontario walked DC awkwardly to the couch in his office and sat down, the fed still hanging onto him for dear life. His cries had thankfully gone down but he was still hysterical, unable to look anywhere and instead burying his head in Ontario's chest. One of the figures wiped his eyes before turning to the others, trying so hard not to cry.

"We need to go." The figure announced. With that, the five figures disappeared leaving behind a hysterical fed, and a Canadian province who had just won the game.

They didn't mean to hurt him, and DC's anguished cries would haunt them the rest of their lives.
