Louisiana always saw DC off in the mornings before he left for Washington.

No matter whose arms he was asleep in, no matter what he did the night before, at six am the morning DC was to leave for Washington he was always up with him. He helped the fed gather his bag and make sure he had everything, and make him a nice breakfast since being out of his boyfriend's sight for three days meant they couldn't make sure he ate. They'd always sit together at the kitchen island, DC eating and Louisiana just holding his hand, talking softly about their plans after he returned from Washington. Louisiana would always kiss him nice and slow right before he left, and DC would show him that yes he had the little protection charm bag he made him right in his pocket, and he had nothing to be afraid of. It was always the hardest goodbye.

(Louisiana knew secretly DC didn't believe in that stuff, but he knew he did it to keep his mind at ease).

DC's first call when he got to Washington was always to Florida.

Florida tended to get more chaotic when DC left Orlando, and the others deduced it was because he was nervous about his boyfriend being so far away. The three other boyfriends talked to DC about this, and soon DC started his ritual of calling Florida right when he got into Washington. Sometimes it was calls when he was in the airport waiting for IDC to show up, sometimes it was texts like 'I'm alive btw' or 'I lived bitch'. Still, the others would report that Florida would wait by his phone, intensely staring at the screen until it lit up, reassuring him that DC was fine. After the confirmation, Florida would get up, and before he'd begin any chaos he'd sneak over to DC's room, pull out one of his ties, and stuff it in his shorts pocket so he'd always have a piece of his boyfriend with him while he was away.

Texas texted DC during meetings.

Despite popular belief, DC and IDC didn't attend many senate or congress sessions. They were often too busy with paperwork, answering foreign dignities or, in the case of DC, working with the president. But when they did attend, it was usually on important laws or debates, which they would then get roped into, although mostly DC. DC never felt welcome in the debates, he'd always feel himself shrinking and praying that someone would talk to IDC instead of him. He always forgot he was technically on camera during the sessions he attended, so whenever Texas texted him it was always a surprise. He never should check his phone during the meetings but he always did, and it was the same two text messages every time.

'Sit up sugar, you're the government, they answer to you'

And

'Don't let them see you sweat'

DC would always sit up a little straighter, and when the discussion came back around to him he'd answer confidently and with a new found purpose. It was like having Texas right next to him.

DC always sent California a copy of the bills that were being proposed.

He knew he shouldn't, and IDC would kill him, but California liked being prepared for the meetings and for whatever arguments any of the states would throw at him. So when IDC wasn't looking or Washington was out of the room, DC would gather his secret folder of the copies of the bills he had just helped write or that were about to be approved and snap pictures of all of them, then send them to California. Sometimes, when it was late and IDC went to bed while DC and California were facetiming, they'd have (quiet) debates about the bills DC sent that day and what the other states would say during their weekly meetings. DC would curl about into California's flannel after, and breath in his boyfriends scent then slowly fall asleep, pretending he was still back in Orlando and in their arms.

New York always picked DC up at the airport when he came home.

IDC was always sad when he left, and DC felt bad to be excited to go home, but after three days of constant work all he wanted to do was be with his boyfriends and work from home. He'd always look forward to landing in Orlando and looking for the stoic face of New York as he waited in the crowd, luckily the state was easily spotted with his large coat despite the hot weather and permanent frown. New York would always break into a smile after seeing DC, however, and open up his arms so he could rush into them, finally feeling like he was home. Secretly, New York would lower his head to DC's ear to whisper how much he missed him and how the house was lonely without him, before the two left to make their way back to the Statehouse. New York always took the long way home so they could sing show tunes together, and he'd always keep a firm grip on DC's hand as he drove while the fed chewed on a New York City pretzel bought especially for him.

It was the tiny moments, like when New York pulled in and DC heard the first 'DEE'S HOME' before getting tackled into a hug by Florida, or Louisiana insisting he take the rest of the day off, or getting caught in a giant cuddle pile with Texas and California, or the way New York kissed him as they spent the night together, that made the travel back and forth worth it.

DC had roots in Orlando now, he wasn't going to leave for all the gold or hurricanes in the world. Orlando was where his boyfriends were, Orlando was where his home was.
