"Do you love me?"

"Of course Dia."

A happy hum.

"Dia?"

"Yeah?"

"Do you love me?"

"Of course Dee."

Most nights together are spent like that, in each other's arms, asking for reassurances over and over until they fall asleep. It's different with their other parents; if Florida asks Texas he'll gently chuckle then kiss him to quiet him, California will go on some long-winded explanation, Louisiana makes him laugh until he forgets what he asked, and New York will kiss him whack him with a pillow, and tell him to go to bed.

But DC and him, they had an understanding.

Florida held his and DC's hand's up to meet the moonlight, intertwining them together and keeping them steady. The other's didn't understand the relationships they suffered to get to the good places they were now. How Florida was manipulated and led astray by Gordon, how DC was abused physically and emotionally by Bryan, there were just some things you couldn't explain if the person hadn't gone through them.

He tried to pretend it didn't hurt to see DC still flinching sometimes at one of their partners' touch, but he understood it. Florida knew his constant confusion and needing reassurance concerned them too. But sometimes it felt only Florida could understand and whisper 'it's just me' to DC when he flinched after being touched, or DC's gentle hand squeezes after Florida asks a million questions just to make sure he isn't being led through the ringer.

Little things like that make their relationship strong.

"You love me right?" DC asks again and Florida looks over at him and smiles. His hair is messy, and his eyes are bright and shiny. He looks content.

"More than all the alligators in the swamp." Florida whispers leaning over and kisses DC on the lips.

"Do you love me?" Florida gently asks and DC smiles.

"More than all the senators in the Senate." DC says and he leans in to kiss Florida. The two kiss in the pale moonlight, lost in one another, old insecurities and past relationships gone for just a second.

It wouldn't last forever, tomorrow there would still need to be reassurances and old wounds would reopen. But for tonight, it was just DC and Florida. And that's how they liked it.
