What do I do for another three hours? Three hours until my keyboard gets delivered. There is not a single thing to do in this apartment. It's clean and other than my ukulele there's nothing else for me to do. I pulled out my phone, finding the recording I took of me singing '8'. After watching it, I realized that I didn't sound too awful. Though I started crying halfway through and didn't finish the song; it sounded decent. I nervously uploaded it, still avoiding any notifications or number of views on my other videos.
Once it was posted I noticed a voice message from the unknown call I had avoided earlier. I typed in my code before listening to the voice recording. "Hello, Sage. This Andrew with Interscope Records. I have found your covers on youtube and have taken a huge interest in your style. I would love to meet you and see what you could potentially bring to the table. You can call me back at (968) 756-4375. Can't wait to hear back from you."
Interscope? Records? I took a few minutes to listen to it over and over again, in complete shock. An actual record label is reaching out to me? This has to be some sort of prank, right?
Instantly I hit Felix's contact and held the phone up to my ear, bouncing my leg as I listened to the ringing. "Hi," he answered plainly.
"Felix!" I practically shouted. "Is Interscope Records a real recording label?"
"Yeah?" He chuckled questioningly.
"Some random guy named Andrew or something, he called me wanting me to call him back. Is that fake? Do record labels even call people? Is this real? I just don't-
"Woah, slow down," he cut me off from my fast paced ramble. "Yes, if a label sees potential in your music, they will contact you before another label has a chance," he explained.
"W-what," I whispered in disbelief.
"Sage, this is huge. You need to call him back. Do you even know who's all signed to that label?"
"No," I shook my head even though he couldn't see me.
"Lady Gaga, Lana Del Rey, Selena Gomez, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, I could go on and on."
"So... I just call him back? Then what?" I truly don't understand how this stuff works. I don't even really know what a record label does. I don't belong here, I thought.
"Well, he might ask you to sign a contract and-"
"What kind of contract?" I asked nervously. The word 'contract' makes me nervous.
"Would you stop interrupting me dummy," he chuckled with annoyance.
"Sorry."
"I don't know, he might not even want you to. Call him back and go from there. Just don't forget to update me on everything. Also if you are signing a contract, read every damn word!"
"Okay, okay," I agreed with shaky hands. "I'll call him now."
"Good luck!"
Once the call ended I hit the numbers on the keypad and hovered my thumb over the green button. Should I really do this? Is this a bad idea? It could be a good thing...I'm overthinking this, just do it! My thumb finally hit the button and I held the phone up to my ear, biting the inside of my cheek with each ring.
"Interscope Records, this is Andrew. How can I help you?"
"S-Sage, my name is Sage." I internally cursed myself out for having such a shaky voice.
"Ah, yes! I've been waiting for your call." He sounded friendly enough. "I would love to have you come down to the label so we can discuss a few things. Would you be interested?"
Discuss what?
"I guess, yeah."
"Perfect, I have time on the 30th at 11 am, does that work for you?"
"Yes." I was getting excited but the nerves got the best of me.
"Is this your cell phone? I can text you the address."
"Yes, yep, yeah that works." Get it together you idiot.
"Amazing. I'll see you at eleven on the 30th. Looking forward to meeting you, Sage."
I instantly hung up, realizing I forgot to say goodbye. I must seem rude to others, but I swear it's just anxiety.
