Sage.
September 12, 2018.
"That was okay but this time try to belt a little more. I also think we should add electric guitar to this, it's missing the punch" Charles' voice echoed through the headphones as he stared me down through the window.
"Actually I'm gonna take a break," I spoke in the microphone and saw him shake his head in annoyance as I took off the headset.
"Sage, you need to work harder if we're going to make a hit single," he growled as I walked out of the booth.
"I'm going to the bathroom," I sighed before exiting the room and stepping into the elevator. Just then my phone started ringing and the second I saw it was Billie FaceTiming me, my mood instantly brightened.
"Hey Billie," I smiled.
"Hey, how's the recording going?" she smiled back.
"Meh, it's rough but it's my first time so maybe that's why," I shrugged, stepping out of the elevator.
"Like I said, I hate real studios. Anyway, I was wondering if I could pick you up after?"
"What for?" I raised a brow.
"Okay so my parents are gone all night and Finneas is staying with his girlfriend Claudia so... I was just thinking you could come over?" She held her breath with a nervous smile while waiting for me to answer.
"Of course, I'll be done in half an hour!"
"Great, I'll be there in 30. Can't wait to see you, babe," she winked before hanging up, leaving my jaw dropped to the floor. Did she just call me babe?
-
"So, did you make a hit?" Billie asked as I sat down in the passenger seat.
"No, and I never will," I sighed.
"I know you could, but if you don't want to you don't have to."
I nodded my head, feeling my heartache. Does every song have to have intense drums and electric guitar? It's not my vibe, it's not how I want my music to sound...but Charles thinks so. I felt Billie's soft hand place over mine, "what's wrong?"
"Nothing, just a long day," I faked a smile.
"I can tell you're lying but okay," she raised a brow, not pushing it. The hum of the matte black filled my ears and I was brought back to last night when we picked up food.
LAST NIGHT
"Are you even going to eat your burrito?" Billie asked as we sat in her car, watching the highway in front of the parked car.
"Yes, after my fries, duh," I said matter-of-factly.
"What the hell? Girl, you gotta eat the fries in between," Billie gave me a disgusted look.
"No oh my god, I can't. Okay, fun fact," I twisted in my seat to fully look at her. "Say I have a plate," I held out two hands, mimicking a plate in front of me as a smile began to grow on her face.
"If I have potatoes, chicken, and veggies; I have to eat all the chicken and then all the potatoes and then all the veggies," I explained seriously, 'pointing' to the imaginary foods on the imaginary plate.
Billies little smirk turned into a chuckle. "What?" I giggled.
"You're adorable," she smirked.
"No, but for real, I ain't tryna mix all the food together!" I said defensively.
"It all gets mixed in your intestine," she shrugged.
"Gross," I fake gagged.
"For real though, you're cute," she said seriously, making my face burn.
Present time.
"Here we are," she yawned as she pulled up to the house. To be honest I was expecting something a lot more extravagant. I mean, this girl is dripped out with Gucci and Louis Vuitton and this is a small average house. I appreciate it actually. From the few times Ive talked to her and hung out with her, its been very apparent that shes super down to earth and doesn't act like the famous superstar she is.
"This place is cute," I smiled as she led me through the small cozy house.
"Thanks, I kinda hate it but oh well," She shrugged as I followed her into a red lit room.
"Why do you hate it?"
"I don't hate it actually, but I don't know, It brings back a lot of memories. I don't know how to explain it," she sighed as she fell onto the large bed. I looked around the room, taking in every detail of it.
"Come," her soft voice echoed through the room. I looked at her and smiled as she held up the blanket to let me slip under them with her. I stared at the ceiling, feeling exhausted after five hours in the studio.
"I'm gonna order some food, what do you wanna eat?" She asked while pulling out her phone.
"Mmm, nothing," I hummed, closing my eyes that suddenly felt heavy.
"Can I ask you something?" She said in almost a whisper, turning to her side so she was fully looking at me. I tilted my head and sensed that she was nervous for some reason. I know I was feeling nervous; the hottest girl I've ever laid my eyes on is under the covers with me, giving me her full attention.
"Yeah," I nodded.
"I don't want to push you or anything, and if you don't feel comfortable the-"
"Billie, just ask the question," I cut her off with a chuckle. She took a deep breath and suddenly I was terrified.
"I don't know how to approach this shit but...do you have a problem with food?" Her voice and face were as soft as her sheets.
"No," I shook my head, "Why?"
"Well, your fridge was hella empty and the only time I've seen you eat was last night. You didn't even finish your food either," she explained.
"I can see how it would look like that, but honestly it has nothing to do with the food," I sighed. I felt her hand find mine and she interlaced our fingers, gently rubbing her thumb on the back of my hand.
"I'm truly just not hungry right now. My fridge is empty because every time I go to buy groceries I have a horrible panic attack," I said truthfully.
"I'm sorry Sage," she frowned and moved a little closer.
"Dont be sorry," I shook my head, accidentally letting out a yawn.
"You wanna take a nap?" She smiled.
"I'd love to," I smiled back.
"Go for it, I can wake you up later?"
I nodded my head and closed my eyes, almost instantly falling into a deep sleep.
