Please Don't Hate Me

Big Red's POV

I managed to hold myself together as I drove home, enough to still see the road, instead of my eyes filling with tears. That may have been because I was mildly angry. Not at Ashlyn, just at... everything. I kept trying to convince Ashlyn we could stay together, but it didn't work.

I walked past my mom as I headed to my room, waving but otherwise ignoring her. I laid in my bed and slowly started crying. I had never imagined being very romantic with anyone, let alone such a mess after a break up. Then again, I never imagined being as close to anyone as I was with Ashlyn.

I wanted to respect her choice, but I was regretting leaving her house so quickly. And what were we now? I couldn't bare to think of Ashlyn as a friend, but I couldn't just stop talking to her. We both still loved each other.

I continued dwelling on things like this and crying for who-knows-how long before I got a text. I glanced at it, planning to ignore it, but it was Ashlyn:

Please don't hate me

I sighed and grabbed my phone.

Me: I told you. I love you.

Ashlyn: I love you. I'm so sorry

Me: I get it.

Ashlyn didn't text back for awhile, but the little text bubble told me she was typing.

Ashlyn: Thanks. Really.

I knew there had to be something else she had tried to say, but I didn't reply.

The next day, I hadn't seen Ashlyn by the time we got to lunch. This wasn't exceptionally rare, it happened quite often. But she wasn't at lunch either. I assumed she must have been at home, preparing to leave the next day.

After awhile, I got up to use the bathroom. On my way there, in the hallway, I spotted Ashlyn eating.

"Ash? I, uh, Ashlyn?"

"Oh, um, hi!" Ashlyn stood up quickly.

"What are you doing out here?"

"Just, er, eating."

"I see that. Come eat with us."

"No thanks." She declined quietly.

"Come on, no use eating in the hallway."

"No, I just... can't."

"Why?" I asked her.

"I- I..." She made her voice barely audible, but I heard her. "I can't bare to sit next to you knowing I ended... us."
