Good for Her

Big Red's POV

"Ashlyn..." I wandered over to my girlfriend after school had ended. Of course, I hadn't seen her over the weekend, or talked to her that day.

"I didn't get a chance to ask." Ashlyn quickly turned to me. "There was just... a lot of chaos."

"Was it okay?" I frowned.

"It was fine." She shrugged.

"You alright?" I asked.

"I'm fine." She leaned over, about to kiss my cheek, before stopping herself. "Right, I should get going."

"Wait, Ash— never mind." I shook my head.

"My dad's coming back next weekend. I will make time for it this time, I promise."

"Lov— see you later."

"You too." She smiled sadly and walked away.

Somehow playing video games in my basement with Ricky turned into me complaining about Ashlyn. "Why are relationships so complicated?"

"Don't ask me." He shrugged.

"I'm so mad at her parents. Can they not tell she hates this? More than before? It's— ugh!"

"I know."

"No offense, dude, but you really don't." I sighed.

"Okay, fair, but I know what you mean because you've complained about it so much."

"It's hard not to. There's so much anticipation. Like... do I ever get to date the love of my life?" I groaned. "I mean, not ever... but before we're both in college? I just wanna kiss Ashlyn. And hug her. And talk to her. And— you get the point." I sighed again.

"Come on, it'll work out. If it's meant to be, it'll work."

"It's meant to be, and it isn't working right now." I said.

"Give it some time."

"It's been 3 weeks! Why can't I date my girlfriend?" I almost shouted. "I can't even focus on anything but her. It shouldn't be like this. It's not fair."

"Nope, it really isn't. But you can't do anything about it right now."

"How come? Why can't I just... prove to Ash's parents that I'm good for her. I'm good for her, right? I try my hardest to be. She comes to me when she's upset. Or she did. That's good... right?"

"Of course it is." He nodded.
