⚠️near death experiences, toxic parents (and their deaths)⚠️
i've set this in more modern times//
———————————
Being wealthy has its upsides, sure. I do not have to worry about a roof over my head or food on my plate, and as long as my parents let me I can get pretty much whatever I want. Downsides? My parents insist on me meeting wealthy male suitors all the time in order to marry me off into a well-respected family. I get some say in it, as in I get to pick which of the suitors I want out of who I am offered, but that doesn't change the fact I want to experience falling in love with someone completely random.
The next suitor I am to meet is a young man resident of the United States; the eldest son of a CEO or something. I don't know, I don't really care. We're taking a cruise ship there, as my parents are so wealthy we can afford to be luxurious on our journeys. The ship is called the Titanic, and is the largest ship built yet, but that doesn't change the fact it makes me nervous. Maybe the nerves are just coming from the anticipation of meeting my next suitor, though.
Boarding the ship was a long and slow process, but after we took our belongings to our luxury suite I took the opportunity to sneak off and explore the shops, restaurants and activities the ship had to offer. I was so in awe with everything going on around me I didn't even realise I was about to collide with someone until it happened.
"Oh, God, sorry!" I quickly apologised, stepping back to look up at the victim of my carelessness.
"Don't worry about it," the boy in front of me chuckled. Judging by his attire of a hoodie and jeans he was my age, but from a more normal middle class family.
"I'm so clumsy, honestly, I really must apologise."
"Seriously, it's cool, everyone makes mistakes."
I smiled lightly, relieved he wasn't bothered.
"Which part of the ship are you staying at?"
"Oh, the- uh- the luxury suite... top floor..." I felt embarrassed saying it, since I didn't want it to come across as showing off.
"Yeah, I figured... your accent kinda gives it away," he gave me a grin, "I'm not that rich - I'm on one of the lower floors, in fact, if my mum hadn't won the lottery I wouldn't be here."
"Oh, uh, congratulations to her, I guess..." Even in that moment, all I could hear in my head was my mother's voice telling me it's not ladylike to use filler words or phrases of uncertainty.
"...Wanna explore together?" he asked, "Name's C/N, by the way."
"I'm Y/N... and I'd love to."
And so C/N became my secret escape from reality.
***
No one expected the ship to hit an iceberg. And certainly no one expected for connection to the mainland to be lost entirely.
What kind of ship didn't store enough lifeboats?
"Women and children first."
That was what the captain had said over the intercom. It went without saying that any incredibly wealthy men were also a priority, as became evident when the lifeboats began filling up.
