you're old enough to afford a mortgage for a house in this one :)

C/N and Y/N had been house hunting for months now, yet they just couldn't find the home that suited their wants and needs. At first glance, their requirements weren't all that fussy: they wanted at least three bedrooms, a conjoined kitchen diner, and a reasonably sized back garden. But, upon looking closer, what they really wanted as a priority was quite obscure.

The couple wanted something unique. Not just unique, something that stood out, but not in a way where people would stare for a prolonged period of time. It would be noticed and acknowledged, but not dwelled on.

Needless to say, the multiple real estate agents they had had were fed up of them, and had been secretly calling each other and warning in advance when a new one was hired. No matter what, however, Y/N and C/N were not deterred and knew that the perfect house was out there for them. A house where they could have whichever sort of family they so wished: whether that be children or cats, or maybe even both.

One thing they weren't picky about was location, as they had both agreed that anywhere would be fine as long as the home met their other wishes. Whether it be a city, a town, or beach, they didn't mind. That was the only advantage the real estate agents could use in their play, but it obviously hadn't been enough as of yet.

C/N and Y/N were living in a small flat in their hometown while they searched, and their lease was due to end in two months time. While their hopes were still up, they were getting a little desperate and rushed. Their latest real estate agent was hoping that would make them speed up on the decision-making, and give them more of an open mind.

One Saturday night they were on their way to a small town about twenty minutes from the coast, where there were a couple houses for them to look at and decent job opportunities available. Unfortunately, a storm was brewing and the rain was proving the car journey to be a difficult one. They agreed it would be best to stop for the night when they reached a coastal town right by a stretch of beach, that had a dock. In the darkened atmosphere, they couldn't see much, but C/N managed to find a parking space.

Y/N had been scrolling online to see if their were any local B&B vacancies for them to crash at, and had been successful in finding one a short walk along the shore. It was definitely a challenging trek, as they had to get quite close to the crashing waves, but they completed it in short time.

"This appears to be it!" she yelled, the rolling thunder making the raised volume necessary.

"It's a lighthouse!" C/N replied, "Didn't it say so on the website?!"

"I wasn't paying attention! I was just looking for vacancies!"

Y/N couldn't help but notice a "for sale" sign set up towards the front of the lighthouse structure. It was set before the boulder-like rocks either side of a path leading up to the tower, which was quite near the sea but still clearly in a safe place. Some would definitely find it scary during storms like this, but Y/N and C/N weren't like that.

From what they could tell, the lighthouse was no longer in official use. In all fairness it was smaller than an average modern lighthouse, so it had probably been replaced with a different one in a slightly different location. Y/N could have sworn she saw a similar tower on top of a cliff in the distance, which would confirm that theory.

Knocking on the door, it took a while before a little old lady opened it up with a loud creak. She smiled warmly at the young couple, beckoning them in as she introduced herself. "I'm Mrs Holmes," she said, "You must be Miss L/N and her boyfriend."

"That would be us," Y/N smiled, relieved to shrug off her drenched coat as Mrs Holmes shut the door.

"You poor things must be freezing!" she tsked, "You shouldn't be out travelling in such bad weather."

"We were on a long car journey," C/N explained, "The storm was unexpected."

Mrs Holmes nodded wisely, grabbing some keys out of a drawer set against the curved wall of the opening room and ground floor. She then trotted over to the spiralling staircase in the centre and began the climb upwards, Y/N and C/N following suit. They passed a couple doors set in the circular walls of the enclosed stairs, a larger flattened step at the foot of each one. It wasn't until the third did the lady stop and unlock the door. "This is the room," she said with a kind grin.

Walking inside, both Y/N and C/N were instantly awestruck with the way the furniture was cleverly worked around the circularity of the room, as well as the round wall going down the centre where the stairs were. A double bed was set underneath a window, which was a porthole with very thick glass, exactly like the rest of them. The headboard was curved to fit the room, but the foot was flat like on a regular bed.

In a simple exchange of a glance, Y/N and C/N knew.

"The kitchen diner is through the first door we passed, and breakfast is at eight," Mrs Holmes said, standing in the doorway, "Have a good night's rest."

"Wait, Mrs Holmes," Y/N said, making the lady stop in closing the door, "I saw the 'for sale' sign outside... You're selling the place?"

"Ah, yes," she nodded with an air of sadness, "I love living here, but I'm getting on in my age and am finding the stairs harder to climb as each day passes. I simply plan on moving to a small beach cabin down the coast for my retirement."

"Has anyone expressed interest so far?" C/N asked, his hopes getting dangerously high, much like Y/N's.

Mrs Holmes shook her head, "Unfortunately not. I've had it on the market for a month, but no one is interested in a lighthouse anymore."

"...We are," Y/N replied, her hand finding her boyfriend's, "This place seems almost perfect, in fact."

"Really?" Mrs Holmes' eyes lit up.

"Well, we'd prefer a garden, but who needs one when the beach is right there?" C/N chuckled, "Point is, this ticks a lot of our boxes."

Maybe it was a twist of fate, or the calling of destiny, that led them to stumbling upon the lighthouse that night. The light at the top still worked, but Y/N's theory of there being a newer modern one nearby was confirmed the next day when the sky was bright and clear. It had been within view when they officially sealed the deal on the lighthouse roof balcony the very next day. Mrs Holmes was very generous and sold it to them for much less than what it was worth.

Three bedrooms, each with their own floors; an office, right below the balcony; a bathroom, covering one storey; and, of course, a lounge and kitchen diner, with their own respective floors. That wasn't even counting the room at the very bottom level, where the front door stood.

Y/N and C/N had found their home, that somehow especially met their one very specific requirement.

It was perfect, much like their new friendship with the nice old Mrs Holmes.
