a ~soulmate au~ in which u attend a boarding school and have a kitchen in ur dorm building

———————

The soulmate system had developed about a century ago: with one prime way of identifying one's soulmate. You craved whatever your soulmate was eating or drinking, to an extent you were absolutely desperate to consume it. That's not to say one couldn't resist the urge, but eating something, anything, was recommended to suppress the craving. Y/N's soulmate loved sweet food, as she had come to learn. She, however, loved spicy food. And, boy, could she handle some intense levels of spice.

So, when the sickening thought of strawberry ice cream tickled her tastebuds, she found herself storming to the dormitory building kitchen in a huff. She was annoyed at being forced out of her room, but her emergency food supplies had run dry and the craving needed to be suppressed. Y/N's eyes widened when she was faced with a classmate of hers scooping pink ice cream into his mouth. C/N. They weren't necessarily friends, but they had talked enough to be more than strangers. Acquaintances was probably the right term.

The corner of her eye twitched as she watched him turn around and meet her gaze, still enjoying the strawberry treat in his hands. Y/N calmed her thoughts, reminding herself of the seven billion people in the world and the amount of them that were probably currently eating strawberry ice cream. Either way, she had to confirm or deny her growing hypothesis. C/N was, of course, still oblivious to the mixed array of emotions swimming through the girl stood staring at his cold food. He watched curiously as she opened the fridge, pulling open the vegetable drawer and then a bright red object.

Ghost pepper.

C/N knew exactly what that thing was. He craved them so often it hurt, especially with his dislike of spicy food. In his two months at the boarding school, the craving seemed to have only gotten stronger when it did hit. And, as he observed the girl he knew to be Y/N open her mouth to take in the pepper whole, his taste buds watered with the familiar want of that very vegetable. Realisation hit him like a truck, as an explanation for her staring at his precious ice cream all made sense.

Instead of saying a word to her, he merely narrowed his eyes, opening the cupboard beside him without glancing at it. C/N knew from memory exactly where the sugar pot was. If she truly was his soulmate and intentionally making him suffer the craving of a ghost pepper, he would make her crave the sweetest substance that everyone knew she despised. All the students knew Y/N to be infamous for hating sweet food.

She watched in pure horror as he tilted the pot upwards to let the tiny white cubes pour on to his tongue. The strange sight was already gathering the attention of the students passing by.

Y/N's face convulsed as the desire to eat pure sugar came strong and true. She huffed, reaching back inside the fridge to grab her favourite bottled condiment of all time: hot chili sauce. With menacing eyes, she spun the lid open slowly, not even flinching when the rim of the bottle met her lips and her lifted head allowed the firey liquid to slip down her gullet. C/N's jaw dropped at the need to drink hot chili sauce consuming him.

"Game on." he muttered, loud enough for both Y/N and the shocked growing audience to hear.

The kitchen quickly evolved into a mess of frosting, spices, honey, and chili peppers. All of the above were scattered across the counter chaotically, either side of the surface being a young student with a full belly and aching taste buds. The boy was full to the brim with sweets and chocolate, whereas the girl was stuffed to the maximum with spices and peppers. Fierce glares were still being exchanged, despite the eating spree having come to a halt.

Y/N was the first one to say anything, neither of them having said a word since the whole thing began half an hour ago. "You're telling my soulmate likes fucking sweets. Sweets!"

"What about me?" he retorted, a scowl on his face, "My soulmate likes eating fucking fire!"

"It's more exciting than eating sickening shit! Where's the flavour in that?"

"At least I don't damage my tongue!"

She scoffed, "At least I don't rot my teeth!"

Silence ensued, the atmosphere in the room growing more intense by the second as the soulmate pair pierced each other's heads with their dangerous gazes. The audience that now consisted of nearly everyone in the building was as quiet as a mouse, afraid of triggering the ticking bomb in the room.

Until, the two's lips both curved upwards into smiles in sync, small sounds of giggles escaping their voice boxes. The volume increased gradually till it reached the point they were both laughing with happy tears pricking at their eyes. Confusion swept over the onlookers to the soulmate-discovering event. Had they all collectively missed something?

"Oh my God..." C/N finally said, wiping away some joyful tears, "I don't think I've ever hated spicy food more than I do right now..."

"The same for me with sweet food!" Y/N laughed back, picking up and dropping an empty frosting tub, "Your tummy is really going to regret this later..."

"So is your asshole..." he grinned, making her roll her eyes playfully.

The audience watched in stunned silence as the boy walked around the kitchen island and to the girl at the other end, wrapping an arm lazily around her shoulders.

"I think we have much to discuss," he said, to which she nodded.

The cleaning staff certainly weren't pleased about the mess later that day.
