thankfully i've been doing basketball in PE lately, so know the basic outline of how it works!

————————

The squeaks from trainers rubbing against the floor were nothing new to Y/N as she walked into the gym with her bag slung over her shoulder. She was there to see her friend, C/N who would just be finishing up with basketball team practice at that time. During it, she had been at her own after school club.

It was no surprise to find that the floor squeaks were coming from C/N, and only C/N, as he continued to shoot hoops by himself. Being the team captain, he always felt he had to practice harder than the rest of them, and such perseverance was one of the reasons Y/N had a huge crush on him. "C/N," she said softly, but despite her soft tone, he still recoiled in fear.

Standing up straight after taking a deep breath, he said, "God, I didn't hear you come in, Y/N," as the ball he had been using rolled away.

"When are you gonna finish?" she asked, ignoring the fact she had scared him.

"A while longer," he said, "Don't wait up for me."

She looked between the ball and the hoop, "Do you want some help?"

"Hm?"

"Do you want me to help you practice? I'm decent at basketball."

C/N shrugged, "Okay, but don't get too sad when I beat you, shorty."

"I didn't mean a match-"

"Too late, you agreed to help."

She huffed, "God, fine, just let me put my trainers on."

After she had changed into them and removed her tie and blazer, she stood at the centre of the court while she rolled up her sleeves. It was a good day to have worn trousers instead of a skirt.

"Ya ready?" he smirked, bouncing the ball in front of him.

She shrugged, "Sure," and got into position.

C/N chucked the ball up above them, and despite jumping, Y/N knew she didn't stand a chance in catching it before him. That didn't guarantee him getting the first point, however, and she quickly darted round him as he attempted to dribble the ball to his net. Her speed was one advantage of her smaller stature, so she used it to cut around him and snatch the ball. It was lucky, really, that he wasn't used to playing with shorter players, and it was what gave her a chance (albeit, a small one) at winning.

That proved to be true when C/N showed a minor shocked reaction at her stealing the ball, but he quickly wiped it off and ran back after her down the court. She heard him coming and shot from outside the three point line before he could reach her, successfully making the ball go through the net. Like the name suggested, three points are awarded when a person scores from outside the three point line.

She grinned at C/N, flashing him a cheeky smile paired with two thumbs up. "Don't ever underestimate me, honey."

Internally, he couldn't help but squeal at her referring to him as 'honey', even though it was in an unromantic context. "Okay, guess I'll have to start playing serious now, honey."

And so the real game commenced.

It wasn't really surprising that C/N did eventually win, but that didn't stop him from being amazed at how skilled Y/N's dribbles and shots were, as he had always believed her to be an amateur. She put up quite a good fight, he had to admit. "The gym'll be closing soon," he said, panting from the match, "We should get going."

"Where to?"

"How about the park basketball court? I kinda wanna teach you how to slam dunk... even though you might be a little short for it."

"I'll prove you wrong, bitch."

"Wow, calling me 'honey' earlier but 'bitch' now...? What a downgrade."

She grinned at him, in an attempt to hide her mild fluster.

When they arrived at the park, it turned out Y/N was indeed too short to slam dunk, but if she worked more on jumping she stood a chance. Nonetheless, she eventually got too tired and sat on the concrete ground as C/N began showing off with tricks. "Aren't you tired yet?"

"A little... but I do basketball regularly, so..."

She hummed, "Why do you feel the need to be the best?"

C/N stopped bouncing the ball, holding it in his hands, "I don't know... I enjoy basketball, and I want to be really good at something I enjoy... don't you?"

"I guess... but I don't feel the same burning desire you do."

"Then what do you desire, if not a hobby?"

You. "N- Nothing."

"There has to be something."

She shrugged, turning her face away to hide her burning cheeks.

"Could it be... a person?"

When she turned back, she was surprised to see his face was mere inches away from hers as he crouched before her. Now he could definitely see her enflamed features.

"Who?"

"Hm?" she squeaked, somewhat matching the sound trainers made against gym floors.

"Who?" he repeated.

Y/N stared with wide eyes at him.

"Is it... me?"

She was at a loss for words, and unable to respond, so merely remained silent. That was as good as a yes in that situation.

"You know, being good at basketball isn't the only burning desire I have."

A small 'huh?' sound escaped Y/N's mouth.

"I, too, have a burning desire for a person."

Please let this be going where I think it is, she thought- well, prayed.

"And, yes, that person is you."

Y/N was dumbfounded, and swore her face paled to the contrast of a Victorian ghost.

C/N laughed, "Come on, I'll drop you home, honey."
