Chapter 15

I looked out onto the dark blue lake; I had noticed that the weather had changed but not enough for my skin not to prickle. The goose bumps had risen long ago on my arms; I was still barefooted and in the white nightgown that I had awoken in. I felt utterly alone just standing here, not even the fish in the water could be seen. I still wasn't exactly sure how I found the path, I just remembered running out of the house and into the tress.

"I thought you might be out here." A voice said from behind me. I didn't turn nor did I speak back to the voice. Apparently to everyone else I had enough time to myself. I just stared out into the water.

"You have a habit of just running off don't you?" He asked as he came and stood next to me. Out of the corner of my eyes I could see he was wearing a dark charcoal twill jacket and black skinny jeans, the bottoms pulling into the black military boots. His hands had been stuffed into his jacket pockets. A blast of cold air came whipping though the thin piece of material that I had on. I shivered.

"This is where I come to clear my head." He said pulling off his jacket and putting it over my shoulders. "It's a calm place, quite place. My dad use to bring me out here when I was younger, when he..." it seemed like he was talking to himself. I still didn't say anything; I pulled my arms through the sleeves of the black jacket.

"I was out here once when I was real young. Wanting to go swimming so I just jumped in, I almost drowned. And yet something pulled me out at the last moment. Im pretty sure I died but the next thing im looking at...a boy my age with his scared brown eyes and his curly hair, he was just staring at me. His dad was there through. Would you believe me if I told you that's how Trace and I met?" he asked still just staring off. I was trying to imagine Ocean as a little kid with long legs and those bright blue eyes of his.

"I should get you back to the house, im pretty sure you still have a fever and it's just going to make it worse by being out here." He said as the wind blew some of his dark bangs into his face. Other shiver went through my body. He held his hand out to me. I wanted to be by myself, wanted to be able to think but I had to admit Ocean seemed to be ok company. I looked up from the lake and the mountains to his hand; he had long skinny fingers I noticed. His nails looked as though he had been biting them for ages. My eyes drifted to his face and the first thing I noticed was the long dark bags underneath his blue eyes.

"Ronnie I'll pick you up and throw you over my shoulder if I have to." He said coming towards me. I closed my eyes and put my arms up to cover my face. After a moment I uncovered my face to see that he was just staring at me. I looked at him then he just shook his head.

"Come on I'll carry you back if you want." He said as he outreached his hand again. I didn't have time to react when he grabbed my hand; he pulled me up into his arms and lifted me up, his arms underneath my knees and against by back. I wanted to scream at him to put me down but I barely had any energy left. He walked back up the path to the house and the last I saw was the sun sitting against the horizon.

I was awoken by a door slamming and people screaming.

"Ocean is that you?" someone asked

"Yeah it's me Trace." He said "and don't be so loud."
