"Meditations on the Art of Distance, No. 1"
With cold hands do I untie the knot,
unlock the lock,
pry free the lid.
With a smile upon my tired face
do I undo the cord,
unroll the scroll,
and read your words of love.
That is how I see your eyes,
and hold your hand,
and touch your lips.
here –
in a fast-food restaurant,
late at night,
far from home yet close
to you.

AUTHOR'S NOTES
✫・゜・。.・。. ✭The original #poemchallenge! Young and madly in love with my wife-to-be, we had 9 days apart over Christmas. I challenged myself to write a new poem for her each of those 9 days and share them with her when we both returned to ring in the New Year.
This series of poems was written for an audience of one and they are riddled with shared knowledge and private references that are ours alone. Even so, there's something universal about young love that I think allows them to stand on their own. I hope you agree.
