"On the Loss of Words"

Sometimes I find myself

too busy to write poetry

and am left with a debt

accumulated –

Words, like library books,

lost and overdue.

It took a spring snowfall,

a sudden wind,

some time with friends,

a call from home,

a choir's song,

a paper crane,

a bout with flu,

a pillowed head,

a hug from you,

and a car ride

down the highway,

through that night,

with you glowing there beside me...

It took all these things and more, tonight,

to put my pen at last to page.

I'm not falling out of love, my dear –

I'm simply falling out of poetry.
