"Asleep one night in Estelí"
She fell asleep
in a pool of blood
with her face so swollen,
her veins all blue and bursting
beneath the welt and we
left here there,
we left her
there, saying
"Oh God, someone must've slugged her
good, oh God, she's ugly that way,
looks cold,
oh God, we knew it wasn't safe out here
at night but this is new, this is so
new" and we
left
her there,
asleep.

AUTHOR'S NOTES
✫・゜・。.・。. ✭Another dark tale from my time in Latin America. All of it was formative, so much of it was beautiful, some of it was overwhelming... and then there were the ugly bits. Like this one.
People have told me my poetry is haunted by memories. Add this one to the list.
