I keep my watch set to your time zone
and spend my days here,
pleasantly confused
about the lateness
of the hour.
"Happy Anniversary" –
the words tumble from my mouth
like unruly schoolchildren
and you respond in kind.
But even as the whisper forms
upon the softness of your tongue,
your unsaid words pre-empt me.
For your voice is a province closer to the sun, my love,
and an hour further
from its setting.
