"watching fireworks at a small-town fair"
as the first explodes, the conversations fade
gently and without apology,
each soul party to an understanding
of silence.
a gap, a lull,
an expectant hush
as the mayor lights the second fuse:
a cacophony
in utero,
at last burst from its womb
and into beauty.
