Till the fourth or fifth day Enzo didn't take heed of the poor abandoned Tarek's ring over his book. He was reading again "Heart of darkness" by Conrad. He took the book and squeezed against him leading it to his nose as he slid the ring into his other wedding finger. His nice bookworm. He just enjoyed reading auction cataloges or interior design magazines. But he was always reading books. He thought about the project of building a library just for him in one of the empty rooms waiting for some furniture. All went down the drain. No bookcases, no common projects, nothing at all.
Since his sudden and feverish decision of throwing out Tarek, he didn't let himself thinking. He had got on with his life. Not even took a glance to his side of the bed. And now that abandoned ring.
- Pauline, I don't know what I did. I am a real wanker. I'm gonna lose Tarek.
- Well, that's your choice, yeah -she resumed as usual rational and pragmatic.
- I saw his engagement ring on the bedside table. He took it off.
- Don't you think it's the normal thing?
- Oh, Pauline. On seeing it laying around over his book almost made me cry. I mean it. Should I ask him to come back?
- Enzo, you threw him out of your house and you even didn't do it yourself. You told Duncan.
- Do you think it's a rude gesture?
- I'm only telling you, don't you hurt each other.
- Are you telling me I have to give him up?
- Don't you give him up?
- Well... I don't know. I just threw him out. It was an impulse...
- You can't make up your mind with him, darling. You have a roller coaster relationship since the very beginning.
- Roller coaster relationship? Explain to me that -he couldn't help laughing.
- Just that. Up and downs all the time.
- Funny. I had never imagined you had such a frivolous vision about our relationship.
- I'm not saying it's frivolous. It's just... passionate.
- I guess according to you that's a bad thing.
- Oh, Enzo. Stop it. Why are you getting defensive? I don't argue that you've loved each other madly.
- Don't speak in past...
- But your instint might say to you that you must turn the page.
- Well, my instinct is an asshole. I don't want to turn the page, I want to stay right at the last paragraph. And enough of simils with books. I don't even like reading.
- My love, what do you feel?
- I'm feeling I'm a wanker and love runs down my veins. Do you think it's corny enough?
- You could never be corny.
- I can't ignore how deep in love I am with him. Do you think it's right trying to win over his heart?
- I see right whatever makes you happy and you know it. But shall we talk a bit about work?
During all this time he waited in vain not a call from Enzo but only a whatsapp or email. Two years of relationship and all was over in a flash without a trace. On the contrary, Duncan had called him several times. There's no reason but he kept apologazing and Tarek had not an ounce of scorn in his body. He adored Duncan and had proved to be a good friend. His task was obeying Enzo and that's what he did. He didn't always agreed his decisions.
