That movie was the most tiresome experience he had ever felt. And that's saying something taking into account what kind of actor Enzo was. Someone who had never got enough deep into his characters to give them credibility. All along his career he had played all kind of people and their experiences quite often had pushed him to the edge, but nothing like "78th Road", Sean Penn fifth movie as director and first one for Enzo as executive producer.
Normally, once the shooting was over, his involvement in the movie was over too. Slowly but surely he would strip away (most of the times he needed some days) the skin he had been wearing all these months and after the end of the shooting party, he would take some days off.
As executive producer it was different. The shooting might be finished and with it his involvement as actor, but the producers never rested. That was he had learnt in that movie. Once finished the shooting, it started the post production.
The shooting had been quite troublesome, not only because the difficult relationship with Mr. Penn, but also because it required some changes in the budget. The executive producer was also the person who was in charge of arrange it and documented each expense.
The post production included the edition. He was allowed to review it and take care the creators, inversors and studio's vision would carry out.
Lastly, he also managed the marketing of the product. He had to fix with the inversors, channels, budgets and ways of promotion. The management in movie theatres was conducted by him as well as the paperwork to take part in movie festivals.
Enzo was imbued in one of his feverish activities and it was hard to kidnapp him to a "simple check-up". But his own pains forced him to do what doctor Deacon told him and submit himself to the dictates of his conscience.
- The cancer will never leave me alone, won't it?
- Have you studied medicine, know-it-all?
- What's the idea? Answer me -he turned to him hurt in his inner pride.
- Oh, now you are in a hurry. Why didn't you come when you started to feel bad?
- It's not that easy. I'm very busy. And I am still very busy.
- Well, it's advisable to take a break.
- It had reproduced again...
- No, there's no tumour. Funnily enough everything works out fine. Have you thought about the chemoembolization?
Enzo puffed, fidgeting about on his chair.
- I don't want to know nothing that starts with chemo. No, Deaky. That thing will fuck me up slowly. It becomes you in a dead man walking. I know, I've seen it.
- We can get it, trust me.
- It's not about trusting. I've been years taking that medication and actually, what for?
- If you hadn't taken those drugs, today you wouldn't be alive. They wouldn't give you the Oscar, you wouldn't get married with that wonderful man. You wouldn't live all those nice things. Can't you see?
- What is the price? I'm a real slave to the chemistry. The other day we went out to dinner with friends and between dishes we had to go to the bathroom to Tarek inject me the interferón. Tell me all this didn't bring me the liver cancer.
- No, Enzo. Your cancer likely was favoured by your hepatitis. Just that.
- And got worse by the wild medication that I'm taking. That's the truth.
- The medication has saved your life, darling.
- Why can't we be honest with each other, dear? I have three diseases to cope with. Tell me how many chances I have to not dying of some of them.
