The african country couldn't cope. With Mozambique's poor social facilities was impossible taking in so many orphans in all the public orphanages. Therefore, they sent them to the non-governmental organizations.
The children's refugee had been opened only two years ago. It was one of the most recent works in the foundation.
There were 41 children of different ages. From newborn babies to 12 year old children. Any Africa country had a thousand of open wounds to heal but the AIDS orphans was such an alarming amount that if they had built five refugees, they would have filled. In fact, the government paid barely attention to this trouble that the estate centres were collapsing and Enzo's foundation was key in this work. Most of the children who lived there came from state refugees that couldn't cope with the enormous health expenses and must be closed.
While they showed Enzo and Tarek each room to supervise all the building, they were followed so closely by a group of happy children running by their side although they didn't dare to touch them. Just looked at them closely.
One of the co-ordinators explained them the plans to make the building bigger, because it started to be difficult accommodate the increasing demand.
There were different situations in those orphans's lives. Both parents dead, one of them alive but unable to keep them and others lived with one or other and spent part of the day there to have their medication and eating three times.
The waiting list was increasing all the time and that's why they were forced to extend the children's home, in a dignified way. In the same complex of buildings there was another children's home only with the terminally ill children.
Surely an orphanage was one of the places where one could understand at its most cruelty that plague's havoc. In a 30 million population country, there were 2 million orphans, from whom 600.000 they had lost their parents. AIDS affected 12% of the population and killed around 40.000 people per year. Despite the giant advances there was still so much to do before this cruel disease stopped taking away so many lives.
The orphanage worked in a very single way. It could and must work like a big family. Every child did their homeworks being supervised. Cleaning up, washing the dishes and tiding up. So each one of them was useful and part of a family, something mosto f them weren't aware of till they got there. They cared each other.
They had school and sick bay to assure a proper medical assistance. Enzo and Tarek checked out first hand they had the same antiretroviral treatment as they used.
From the 41 children, 10 were practically hopeless cases. They had arrived with a very poor health and they gave them life-sustaining treatment waiting for a death that sooner or later would come along. The rest of children, also sick but luckily in control by the medication were constantly under checking because each body was different. Each organism reacted in a different way with the virus and germs attacks.
Throughout the tour around the facilities receiving informations about its working, timetables, activities, etc, a group of children followed them. Nobody had to tell them to behave themselves and their aim was not call their attention. For them Enzo and Tarek were two unknown faces in their daily life and were simply expectant. Following their steps.
Till Tarek couldn't stand the temptation anymore and lift one girl who looked at him so closely, in his arms.
- My name is Tarek -he said very slowly pointing to himself as the girl stood staring at his face some seconds, very serious-. Ta-rek -he repeated.
The little girl's huge eyes lit up when she touched him timidly his nose and squirmed herself funny with his ticklings.
- Your name is... -he tapped her chest with his fingers while the little girls kept up laughing leaning her head back.
