WAS IT ALL WORTH IT?

Enzo looked closely at Chris lying down on his sofa and couldn't see the difference between this one and the younger. The years had treated him kindly. He had still those regular and pleasant facial traits. His hazel eyes were outlined with wrinkles and the same nice and turned-up nose.

He had come along with two Cristal champagne bottles and his Waldorf salad. Enzo clapped like a child remembering all that was plotting around that salad. Suddenly everything came back clearly to his mind. The cottage he had rented in Howth near the graveyard, his big hands moving easily all over the kitchen, with that complicity.

- How did you recall it?

- Of course. It was the only thing you ate moderately well.

- But it had to be your salad. Taron, darling. Look what Chris brought us. Isn't he a cutie? -he handed him the bowl of salad.

- Hello, Chris. In fact I've also cooked some salad. Funny -Taron exaggerated his smile, fussing around the kitchen in his unique style.

- I can't compete with Taron. I'm still recalling your shrimps on your birthday in Los Angeles. Some memorable.

Taron had such a monumental ego, like a rock star but tried not to get soft with Chris's flattering words.

- We're leaving you with your work, dear. But don't be long or else we're starting to eat each other.

Enzo waited paciently to see Taron's face. He loved to tease him. But Chris looked at him weird at these words.

- Oh, excuse me, love. I was kidding -he played it down with a hand gesture.

- I imagine that.

They had talked too much about work and Enzo opened with his usual skill a third Cristal bottle, this time from his cellar, filling Chris's glass to the brim.

- Do you want to get me drunk? -he said with half smile.

- Do you want to get drunk? -Enzo asked fixing his big eyes on him like torches.

- Of course not

- Of course not.

- Sure?

Chris gulped down the glass he had just filled him up and got the hiccups. Both burst into laughter.

- Chris, you shouldn't give up with her. You should fight for Ekaterina. Whenever you went out together, you looked like an amazing couple.

- A couple is not only looking great in photocalls, don't you think?

- Don't be so literal, dear. You were perfect in everything else too. You were meant to each other.

- I'm a part of it and I doubt it.

- Then there's no chance you and Ekaterina come together again -he said filling up his empty glass.

Enzo's glowing eyes were so beautiful with the help of the champagne.
