MY PARTICULAR HOMAGE TO...
Swaziland was a small state set between Mozambique and Southafrica. An absolute monarchy smaller than Israel, Eslovenia or Kuwait. Its name came from the swazi tribe, a bantu ethnic group. Despite its increasing tourism it was still one of the countries with lower per capita income and one of the most punished with AIDS. One from four citizens had the disease. Here the bite of that terrible plague was very deep. Its last absolutist King had declared AIDS as national disaster.
The country face it the best it could, with a lot of help. Its contribution didn't reach to one third to defeat the virus, the rest came from the World Wide Fund and the huge amount of non governmental organizations that filled the country.
69% of its population lived precariously while their powerful King was regarded one of the richest monarchs in the world. Forbes magazine valued his fortune in over a hundred million dollars and had built a palace for each one of his thirteen wives. Peculiarities in african countries.
The shelter Enzo found in Lobamba was pretty much the same as the Inhambane one. Some bigger. There were 56 orphans and it worked the same. With school, nursing facilities, orchard, hens, pigs. They ate what they made and that helped to pay some expenses; around 700.000 pounds a year. The lighting system was very expensive and they had problems with drinking water. That affected their harvest and sometimes they were forced to pay the first few orphans's expenses when they could set free from the orphanage.
Enzo right away gained every children's will. He tried to talk to them with their broken english about their reasons to be in the shelter. Some of them didn't want to talk at first but they ended up trust him blindly. Enzo's eyes could be so pure and innocent as theirs.

The gazes duel was something Enzo liked to do with them because through it he could guess just a little bit what they had been through so early in life. Plenty of them had arrived with a lot of evils; from malnutrition, several diseases, all kind of abuse and sexual explotation. In some cases after their parent's death some of them had been rescued from prostitution.
Enzo used to attend the children's lesson as another child where they talked about all kind of things: being aware and prevent from AIDS, gender equality, childhood protection and sexual health. They offered psychologic support, feeding education. The idea was the children could develop their own self-esteem as soon as possible.
The theatre groups made by Enzo were once more successful. It helped them to express themselves, relating with the others differently, sharing, trusting their own potential. And it was new and intriguing for them all.
Such an important part of children's education was the traditional and modern farming. They learnt to get ready the soil, seeding and transplanting, digging the weeds, irrigating, controlling the plagues, reaping and storing and then they sold their products in the marketplace. Also they emphasized the recovering of the traditional knowledge about native farming, medicine plants and biodiversity.
