Farewell

"This is my last event here, so I want it to be memorable and special."

I kept on zoning out as what happened last weekend kept replaying in my head. Freak! Freak! Marvin! How could he do that to me?! We haven't met for years! For freak's sake, we were friends! Hinilot ko ang sentido ko habang pinoproblema ang nangyari. 

"Daphne!" 

Nabalik lamang ako sa sarili nang marinig ang pagtawag ni Mrs. Questro sa akin. We were here inside the board room, having a meeting for her last event.

Kaagad gumapang ang hiya sa buong katawan ko nang makitang nakatingin sa akin ang lahat ng narito kasama namin. I shifted on my seat when I saw Luckson raising his brow at me. 

Hindi ako nagparamdam sa kanila simula nang mawala ako nang gabing iyon. I purposely didn't open my phone. Natatakot ako sa kung anong makikita ko. Gusto ko ring mapag-isa dahil gulong-gulo ako sa nangyari.

"I'm sorry," nakayukong ani ko.

"It's fine. I didn't start yet, but please, pay attention," sagot ni Mrs. Questro bago nagpatuloy sa pagsasalita.

I tried my best to focus, but I was still drifting away. Mabuti na lamang at katabi ko si Madina, kinakalabit niya 'ko sa t'wing nawawala ako. 

"You can all go now..." Mrs. Questro said when she finished. I was about to stand up, too, but she continued, "Not you, Daphne. I still need to discuss things with you." My heart started beating fast, not knowing if she'd scold me or what.

Nagkibit-balikat lang sa akin si Madina bago ako iwan. I waited for the other heads to go before walking towards Mrs. Questro. Nililigpit niya na ang gamit niya ngayon. Sandali pa 'kong nakatayo sa gilid niya bago niya 'ko balingan.

"Your mind was flying earlier," she stated. "Nakuha mo ba ang mga sinabi ko?" She raised her brow as she held her folders towards her chest.

I bit my lower lip. I knew I lost my focus on our meeting, but I did my best not to. I quietly sighed before getting my notepad. Kagat ko pa rin ang labi ko nang ipakita sa kanya iyon.

She raised her brow. An amused smile formed on her lips when she saw my notes. Alam kong hindi ko maaalala ang sinabi niya kanina dahil wala roon ang buong atensyon ko kaya sinulat ko na lamang ang mga narinig ko.

"That was great," she commented as she nodded her head. "Anyway, I want you to work with me on Mr. and Mrs. Santiago's wedding anniversary," she informed before making her way out. I tailed her from behind.

"You're done with the birthday party of the senator's child, right?" She glanced at me before pressing the elevator button—going down. Nasa pinakataas na palapag kasi kami kaya kailangan naming mag-elevator pababa sa second floor.

"Yes. Everything's good with Veronica's party."

She raised both of her brows before getting inside the elevator when it opened. Without further ado, I followed her. She was the one who pressed the second floor, so I remained standing quietly beside her. 

"Next month is the wedding anniversary. It will be grand, so we should work together."

Tumango lamang ako dahil hindi ko alam kung ano pang isasagot. I would always say yes to her, like how I was with my parents. Ang kaibahan lang, gusto ko talagang gawin ang mga offers niya.

Mrs. Questro's phone rang, so I looked away—giving her privacy. Nakita ko sa salamin ang paglingon niya sa akin matapos makita kung sino ang tumawag. Nakita ko rin ang pagsilay ng ngiti sa labi niya. I instantly know that it was Elmo. Palihim din akong ngumiti para sa kanila. At last, after ten years of being married, they worked out well. Hindi ko tuloy mapigilang isipin na baka dahil kay Elmo kung bakit nag-resign si Mrs. Questro.
