"What's up?" She asked, a little confused.
All of a sudden, his watch beeped and Ella stared in bewilderment as he scrambled to get his phone to text their friends.
After a couple minutes, Kendall looked up from his device, whispering dramatically, "It's time."
"Oh, no. Don't tell me-"
Ella jumped as the front door burst open with Logan, Carlos, and James clamoring in.
"Oh, it's so time!" Logan cried out as the three boys sat at the dining table.
It was the guys' annual Day of Pranks that they have celebrated since the sixth grade.
Ella was always supportive of their high jinks and stupid schemes, but she just never got that interested in this one.
However, the boys took this day very seriously.
They even created a book called Lord Prankerton's Book of Rule that had every law and regulation for this competition.
"Gentlemen, it is time to find out who will be crowned the next Sir High King Lord of..." Kendall announced as he pulled out a purple and gold, bejeweled crown. "The Pranks."
The boys all gaped in excitement as Ella rolled her eyes, not ready to face another year of this chaos.
"The time of pranks is upon us." Logan declared.
"And as last year's victor, I must now let all yee competitors challenge me for yonder crown." Kendall continued.
"Ahh, it seems like it was just yesterday that we made that crown in art class." Carlos reminisced.
Kendall tossed a big, brown book onto the table.
"The rules are simple." James said, flipping it open. " 'If ye is pranked, ye is out.' The last man to go unpranked becomes Lord High King and wins the crown."
Katie popped up next to Kendall, "And this year, I am playing."
"Nice." Ella encouraged, giving the girl a high five.
"Playing?" Carlos scoffed. "Katie, this isn't a game."
"You're too young and too girl." James reasoned as Ella gave the boys a look of disbelief.
"What's that supposed to mean?" She questioned, crossing her arms.
"It means that no girl shall play, so sayeth Lord Prankerton's Book of Rule," Logan chimed in, gesturing towards the book.
"First of all, you're being sexist. Second, you guys made this whole thing up in middle school." Ella pointed out.
"And that is a picture of Sir Walter Raleigh." Katie added, pointing to the cover of the book.
"Blasphemy!" James, Logan, and Carlos shouted at the two girls.
"Katie, this competition can get very ugly, and if you get hurt, Mom will kill me." Kendall exclaimed.
"Oh, please. She can beat all of you guys up in a minute. Just let her participate." Ella stated, confused as to why they were being so unfair.
"Fine. We'll put it to a vote," said Logan. "All those who believe we shall let Katie join our ye Day of Pranks, say aye."
All of the boys stayed silent, except for Ella who raised her arm, saying "aye."
"All those who oppose?" Kendall wondered.
