The lights in their house were turned down, not a single candle lighted. They weren't types of people who would get easily afraid but these days they felt a need to be extra cautious, not sticking out. Their neighbourhood wasn't really well-lighted. It would bring unwanted attention to their household.
"Why we care about it?" Isabel asked after two days of hiding. "It's not like we're working with Ben still. He's dead"
Furlan and Levi exchanged looks and Levi rolled his eyes. "That's exactly why we're hiding brat"
"Yeah, Issy. Now that he's dead we're a target. They're killing off Ben's workers" Furlan said and moved his bottle cap to the front. He was playing draughts with Sophie again. She was getting good at it recently, they had nothing else to do these days so they kept on playing.
"But why?" she cried out. "We're not dangerous anymore"
"Tsk, brat. You're so good at killing and yet so stupid" Levi spluttered, frustrated with her obliviousness and Sophie couldn't agree more.
"We killed many of his people. We were bad for his business. Men like him hold grudges and he has a lot of them" Sophie explained.
"Yeah, we were the pain in his ass" Levi added and straightened his legs on the couch. He was playing with a bottle of beer which he didn't really like, but he didn't want to use his tea. He didn't have many of it now, so he was ready to save it for better occasions. Hiding in their lodge with three, sometimes annoying, people certainly wasn't it.
"But he doesn't know where we're living, right? Otherwise we would be attacked by this time like twice or more" Isabel pointed out.
"They know from which district we are. That's enough. We must avoid contact with others for a few more days and they'll let it go" Sophie said.
"How are you so sure of it?" Furlan asked.
"This place is full of rats. One will go, the other one will come to replace it" she shrugged her arms. "Ben was one of the rats"
"Let's hope another rat will be merciful enough to hire us, otherwise we'll be fucked" Levi put down bottle on the floor, crossed his arms on his chest and closed his eyes. Sophie leaped at the chance and grabbed his drink. She gulped a lot of it and got back to her game. "Did I let you drink from it idiot?" he scoffed.
"You were toying with it so much that I've thought you won't finish it" she replied.
"Can I drink it too?" Isabel asked.
"Yes" Sophie said but both Furlan and Levi said no at the same time. "Seriously guys? Don't treat her like a child" she rolled her eyes and Furlan shook his head in disagreement. They stared at each other, communicating only with their eyes, fighting for domination.
"Sophie said yes, that means I can do it!" Isabel finished their silent argument and grabbed the bottle but Levi took it out of her hands. "Hey!"
"Tsk, you'll earn it when you'll stop asking stupid questions brat" he said and placed a bottle in front of Sophie's face. "Here, you drink it since you already spitted in here"
"Are you afraid of my saliva?" she asked teasingly, trying to mock him. He caught her eyes and quickly turned his head away to avoid her sight. He was still feeling bad looking at her. How can he stop that guilt? It was driving him crazy, especially now when they were spending all of their days inside, trapped in a small house where walls were so thin that it felt like if you could hear other's thoughts. Just the thought of it reminded him of that terribly good night when he heard her. No, he should stop thinking about it immediately and instead find a way to forget about it and move on.
