Sophie didn't come that night to visit Levi. She was too tired after all of the overwhelming emotions she experienced in those two days. She laid on her bed and fell asleep immediately, waking up in the morning. She tried to change her position from laying to sitting, but hissed immediately and put her hand on the body part that had hurt. Her back was in pain again. She sighed in exhaustion and tried to reach with her hand to the pocket of her jacket where she had a bottle of pills from Hange. She swallowed one and waited a few minutes till it kicked in. Only then did she decide to stand up.
Later in the morning she went to the kitchen where she met Farrah. Sophie smiled slightly seeing her and the gesture was returned. They were both glad to see each other after the fight. At that very moment Sophie wondered if that's how her life would look from now on - living from one battle to another, always wondering whether she'll see her comrades again? It seemed so and it saddened her greatly.
"Good to see you," Farrah said. "I didn't see you yesterday and I thought-" suddenly she stopped, biting her lip. Her face turned red and she put down her head in embarrassment. She didn't have to finish her sentence, though. Sophie knew what she was thinking about and it was completely understandable.
"I was taking care of a friend," she explained. "He got taken to the hospital wing"
"Oh, is he alright?"
"Luckily" she tried to smile again, but found it hard to do. She quickly moved to one of the cupboards trying to find cups. She didn't want Farrah to accidently guess what she had in mind. And all she had in mind was her guilt for wishing Levi to be dead. How could she? Cruel, terrible, awful person.
"Who is that uhm...friend of yours?" Farrah asked suddenly, surprising Sophie. Well, maybe she shouldn't be surprised at all. She hadn't spoken with him for half a year and had been very hesitant and aloof in contacts with others. No wonder why Farrah wanted to ask about that. Sophie seemed to her like a person with no friends. Heck, she seemed like someone who barely had anyone to talk to.
"Levi" she quickly said, trying to sound as casual as possible.
"Oh" was the only thing she said. They stood in awkward silence and Sophie wished for her to leave that room.
"Don't you want to eat breakfast in the canteen?" she asked her as she took two cups from the shelf and started boiling water.
"There's no breakfast there. Commandery still tries to find staff. We have to cook for ourselves for now" Farrah explained.
"Oh" now Sophie was the one who let out an acknowledging sight. It made sense. Their staff came from Wall Maria and they were now in Wall Rose. It could take them some time before they'll find those people that worked for them before. If they will find them at all. Maybe they wil l have to hire someone else for their place. "So I will have to prepare breakfast too" as she said it, she had drowned in memories of one of the last times when she was actually making it.
"Soph! We found ham! An actual ham! Do you understand?" Isabel yelled with excitement as she and Levi went inside.
"That's great" Sophie smiled at her and Furlan did the same. They were standing in their kitchen area preparing breakfast for all of them. It was one of the rare moments when she and him could spend time alone recently. Isabel was full of life, accompanying them constantly. The only time when she wasn't around was when Levi was taking her to do jobs around market stands. She was skilled but for now he only trusted her with smaller assignments, only with him around to supervise her.
"Bring it here, girl" Furlan said and soon she placed a big piece of meat on the table. "Looks like it will hold out for a few days" he added cheerfully and Sophie just couldn't stop herself from showing the same enthusiasm. They rarely had full, nutritious meals, so every opportunity to break from that habit was like a celebration.
