"This is just the way it has to be I guess."
Kana awoke from her nightmare drenched in sweat and incapable of forming sentences. She looked next to her where Kyojuro was sleeping. This was now a regular occurrence for Kana and the nightmare was always the same.
~~~~~~
The clock was ticking down to the final encounter and to say the Hashira were envious was an understatement. An emergency pillar meeting was called.
"Ahhh I envy you guys damnit. Why can't I bump into upper moons." Sanemi grunted.
"It's not like people bump into them all the time. But how are you four doing?" Obanai asked.
"Oh yes I'm fine! I'm feeling a lot better!" Mitsuri beamed.
"I'm not at full strength yet..." Muichiro said bluntly.
"Just a little tired, nothing special." Kana replied
"I'm great! Actually never better!" Kyojuro said enthusiastically.
"That's good, if we lose anymore pillars the demon hunters will be in trouble. But defeating two upper moons without casualty is very noble indeed." Gyomei chimed in.
"The recovery period was surprisingly short. Did anything happen?" Shinobu inquired.
"The master probably wants to talk to us about everything. Including this." Giyu grunted.
"Stop being such a downer Giyu." Novioka snapped.
"I'm very sorry for the wait." A new voice said. "For our pillar meeting today, I Amane will be attending instead of the master. The master's disease has gotten worse, he sends his apologies for not being present."
"Understood, I will pray for the masters health to remain and for you strength Lady Amane." Gyomei spoke.
Amane took a shakey breath and bowed her head. "He would like to give his thanks to all the pillars." Amane then went on to explain Nezuko and asked Kana, Muichiro, and Mitsuri to elaborate on their newfound markings.
"Okay okay so my body was super light!! And then my heart went badum badum and my ears went screeee and tinkle tankle too." Mitsuri explained.
Everyone looked to her and Kana held back a laugh. Obanai placed his hand on his forehead and sighed. Kanroji sunk into a deep bow and frantically apologized.
"I wasn't aware of any marks." Muichiro said.
"I've had them for a while I'm not sure exactly how I got them." Kana stated bluntly.
"Looking back on my previous battle I noticed some things were different. If you fulfill these conditions maybe everyone can get their marks, so listen closely and I'll tell you how it works." Muichiro said.
Muichiro explained.
"Ahhhh yes that makes sense. But I guess my body temperature is always irregularly high so I didn't notice." Kana said enthusiastically.
"So it's that simple huh." Sanemi said.
"I envy the simpletons who can say this is simple." Giyu snapped.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"So I'm assuming getting this mark to appear will be high priority for pillars?" Shinobu asked.
"Agreed. Please Inform the master of our intentions so he can be at ease." Gyomei said to Amane.
"Thank you very much. But I do have one thing to say regarding your mark training." Amane spoke.
"What might that be." Kana asked.
"Those who have manifested the mark must participate and there will be no exceptions." She replied.
Amane left and immediately Giyu got up to leave. Kana zoned out and ignored her fellow Hashira, she'd lost her patience with the situation.
Gyomei clapped his hand together and shocked Kana out of her daze. The other Hashira all paid close attention. "Take a seat. Let's talk a bit more. I have a proposition."
~~~~~~~
"Kana, Gyomei, the master wishes to see you both." Amane spoke as the Hashira were wrapping up their future plans.
"Go on home, I'll be there shortly." Kana said waving Kyojuro off.
The two followed Amane to the master's quarters and sat beside him.
"My children, I would like to share with you what I've learned." The master said slowly. "In order for the final battle to commence I must die."
Kana's eyes widened. Gyomei visibly tensed.
"I'm going to blow the estate up." The master said bluntly.
"You're going to bomb your home?" Kana asked.
"Yes my child."
Kana blinked a few times and looked to Gyomei. He was stone cold. "Whatever you wish master." Was all he said.
"Good, Gyomei you are dismissed. Kana please stay a bit longer." The master said with a slight smile.
Gyomei exited the room and Kana stayed put.
"I suspect by now you've realized." He said.
"It took me a while but I understand now." Kana replied with a sigh.
"The gift of foresight is a heavy burden. You two have seen the future. I trust you will carry out the process." The master asked.
"I've made my peace with the future." Kana said
"Good, you must lead when I am gone. My son will do a great job but, from afar there is only so much one can do. You must lead the charge." The master demanded.
"Why not Gyomei. He seems much more qualified." Kana asked.
"You've seen why it must be you."
"Oh that's such a bummer. I really don't wanna lead." Kana whined.
"You are dismissed." Kana got up and walked to the door looking back only for a second.
"I'll see you soon master." Kana said as she exited the room.
