High heels were originally for men. It was fashionable for horse riding and when Persian came up to Europe, Aristocrats had adopted their style, with high heels being a symbol of status and wealth. Around the same time, local people had adapted their fashion to have high heels as well. So then the Aristocrats had even higher high heels to combat this and thus a war between fashion started, featuring Kings vs Queens vs Peasants. They ended up making two separate types of high heels, fat for men and skinny for women.
By the 18th century high heels were out of Men's fashion (except for cowboy boots) and to women's fashion too. The surge high heels resurfaced into style in the 19th century as photography was invented. The high heels were put on mostly naked models for risque photos.
