Now, many things about Stephen Hillenburg are usually known. One thing that is a very common fact about him, that is thrown around like no one knows, is the fact that he was a Marine Biologist. This is a truth without a doubt, he even got awards such as; received an accolade from Heal the Bay for his efforts on elevating marine life awareness. He's also won eight Golden Reel Awards, four Emmy Awards, 15 Kids' Choice Awards, and two BAFTA Children's Awards for SpongeBob SquarePants, and the Television Animation Award from the National Cartoonists Society. Also In 2011, a newly described species of fungus, Spongiforma squarepantsii, was named after the Spongebob SquarePants.
Stephen Hillenburg was also sadly diagnosed with ALS and died November 26, 2018.
I will also talk about his love of facts. While being a Marine Biologist he created a precursor to SpongeBob SquarePants: a comic book titled The Intertidal Zone, which was used by the institute to teach visiting students about the animal life of tide pools and random marine facts that were actually really cool. The comic starred various anthropomorphic sea life forms, many of which would become SpongeBob SquarePants characters. A character aptly named Bob the Sponge, became Spongeboy and later SpongeBob. Hillenburg tried to get the comic professionally published, but none of the companies that he sent it to were interested.
