Ants don't necessarily sleep, they don't lose consciousness like humans do. Ants have a cyclical pattern of resting periods which each nest as a group observed, lasted about eight minutes in any 12-hour period. Only one of the rest periods bears any resemblance to what we would call "sleep". In short, they rest for a little while, completely ready and alert if something happens.
