It is said, that when Pope Gregory IX was in power, he declared that black cats were associated with devil worship and had them exterminated across Europe. It's believed that the disappearance of cats helped rats proliferate and spread the bubonic plague. Thousands of felines were put to death by devoted Christians who believed that the screams of the dying cats were the cries of the Devil. But there really isn't much documentation besides stories.
