"Who do you think Jeremiah is meeting up with?"
"Maybe a "higher" authoritative figure?" I teased.
Nel pursed her lips thoughtfully. "Maybe he's seeing his wife?"
"Doubt it. I bet his family lives somewhere in the east."
I went to open her window and smelled the sea breeze. There were a few people playing in the waves as they came rolling in, but it was farther on down away from our house.
"Have you ever been to the beach?" She asked quietly while standing behind me.
"A few times yes. I used to be able to surf."
"You did?"
"Mhm. Have you been?"
"Every summer up until the change. I didn't mind going then but I wouldn't go back. I don't trust the ocean."
I squeezed her shoulder gently, "Why's that Nel?"
"I'm scared I'll drown," she whispered and looked out the window.
Now whatever caused her to start fearing the water was beyond me. We could fly so I don't think we would ever be in a situation where we would drown.
"Nel, look at me." I murmured gently.
She sighed and met my eyes before I kissed her.
This caught her off guard and she pushed back involuntarily. I held her tighter and whispered, "don't fight me Penelope, I won't hurt you."
She stood still and I soon felt her arms wrap around me.
I kissed her forehead. "I won't let you drown Nel, I swear."
I felt her relax against me so I began to play with her hair and listened to Marie and James talk about food.
"How long will we be running from this? We can't just hide our entire lives," Penelope mumbled.
"Surely it won't last much longer. I mean, we do know how to fight. We've just never done it in real life."
"Why do people hate us if they're the ones who created us?"
"Because some are scared that we will turn evil and will have failed."
"How do you know all of this?"
"I don't. I'm just assuming really." In all honesty I was surprised Penelope was asking these questions. She was quiet when it came to asking things about us. I guess it was because she felt responsible for all of us and didn't want to falter or seem weak. It didn't bother me though, I was here to protect her and her siblings as well. She just never admits that she needs me as much as when she acts around me.
"Wanna fly?"
"Yes, let's get your brother and sister."
One of the greatest things about flying is the view you get. We had to go pretty high in order for no one to see us. Usually it's difficult only when we're landing and taking off.
This was by far the coolest flight I had ever done! Seeing the fish and other sea creatures jump out of the water was fascinating. James and Marie were enjoying this as much as I was. They were spinning and doing aerials in the air.
Penelope was the only hesitant one. Part of her was trying to enjoy it, but the other half was scared to death.
I flew beside her and brushed my wing against hers.
She mustered a smile before stating, "you must think I'm crazy."
"For trying to overcome a fear? Not at all. I'm proud of you."
"Thanks."
"Hey guys, last one back to the house lays a rotten egg!" James taunted.
