Later that night while sleeping Dad knocked on my door. "Poppy if you want to be out in the barn when the heifer gives birth you better get up. Luke just called me."
"Thanks, dad." I yawn getting out of bed and throwing some clothes on. I rushed downstairs and out to the barn where Luke was patting the heifer's belly while she was laying on the ground.
"Hey Poppy! I didn't think you wanted to miss this." Luke said.
"No, I didn't," I said looking down at my watch. It's 2 am.
I walked over to the stall and grabbed a blanket and spread it down near the heifer and started scratching her between the eyes and baby talking her.
"Interesting theory." He smirked.
"When our horses used to have babies I would sit with dad and baby talk them and it seemed to calm them so why not." I shrugged.
I didn't have to explain anything to Mr. fancy Ranch vet. I actually hadn't paid much attention to him or how handsome he was because I didn't care.
"Did you hear me, Poppy?" He said.
"Sorry what?" I asked.
"I asked if you wanted a water and snack. We are in for a long night if you can hang." He said.
"Oh I can hang and I'll take the water," I said.
He handed me the water and walked around on the other side of the heifer and watched her while he drank his water.
Even though he rubbed me the wrong way he was a good vet I'll give him that.
"So Luke what made you want to be a veterinarian?" I asked.
"My grandpa. When I was young he had a farm that he shared with his brother and like you I liked to watch and help and so I knew at a young age." He said.
"Your grandpa still have his farm?" I asked.
"No, he gave it up a while ago. He lives in a retirement home now." He said.
"Do you have any siblings?" I ask.
"Yeah, a younger brother Owen. He's not around much he plays college football for Texas A&M." He said.
"Don't tell my uncles that. They love football." I laugh.
"Yeah, Chad already told me that." He chuckled.
"How is it with all the guys? I mean your the only girl with a brother and boy cousins."
"Well, I'm the oldest but it's not bad actually. We all get along for the most part. I wouldn't know how to act with a sister." I laughed.
"Your dad speaks highly of you and he is very proud of you." He said.
"Thanks! You can sit down if you like. We may be in for a long night." I said.
He walked over and sit down beside me on the blanket. "She's in active labor you can tell by her udder's but she's not showing any signs of pushing it out yet."
"How many deliveries have you done Luke?"
"Oh, I lost count. How about you Poppy?"
"I have delivered a couple of colts but with Dad's help of course," I said
My phone beeped and I looked down. Who would text me at this time of the morning?
📱 Sweetheart how is it going out there?
📱 She's is in active labor but nothing yet but we are good. Get some sleep dad we have this.
📱 Alright alright I just wanted to check before I laid down.
📱 Nite dad I love you!
📱 I love you too Poppy. Nite.
"Dad just can't help himself." I laugh.
"Oh, that was him?" He asked.
"Yeah wanting to know how things are going. I told him to go to bed."
"He will probably never be able to let go Poppy. What will he do now?" Luke asked.
"Oh he's going to be doing other things on the Ranch plus who knows mom always ropes him into something," I said.
"I don't even know anything about makeup and even I knew who your mom is." He laughed.
"She's famous for sure. I'm not into the whole makeup thing but I do like the eyelashes and lipgloss and we are in the process of making my own." I said.
"That's cool. I know about your mom's makeup because my mom loves the stuff." He said.
"Oh if you tell mom that she will send you home with a bunch of samples for her," I said.
"Really?" He asked.
"Oh yeah, she does that and carries samples everywhere she goes." I laugh.
"When I told my mom who I was working for she almost passed out." He laughed.
"Growing up was hard being The Holland Kane Maverick's daughter. It was hard making friends because most wanted to use me to get to my mom and makeup." I said.
"That would suck."
"Yeah, it was horrible until I met Lilly in the ninth grade and well she didn't know who my mom was." I smiled.
"That was the girl that was at the party with the guy that showed up later?" He asked.
"Yeah, that's Lilly and her boyfriend Garth. We all met in science class in the ninth grade." I said.
The heifer begins moving around a little bit and Luke jumped up and went over to where she was and knelt down. "I think it's about time."
I stood up and walked over and bent down next to him. "Anything you want me to do?"
"How about you check her?" He said.
"I can do that," I said squatting down at the heifer. "She is most definitely dilated."
"Alright, let's just watch and see if she does it on her own and if not then we will have to help her." He said.
We had been sitting watching the heifer for a couple of hours and I must admit I was getting sleepy but I couldn't wait to help birth this calf.
Finally, around 5 am she begins to show signs, and before you know it the calf was born and we smiled at each other and high five each other.
