EPIC
I sat in the very back of the auditorium searching the stage for Titan, I knew with him being Valedictorian he was supposed to be giving a speech but so far he seemed to be blowing off his own graduation. If that was the case, I'd be extremely pissed because it was early as fuck, it was hot as fuck, and I hated wearing suits... but for my little bro I chalked it up and bit the bullet to come support him and now he was nowhere to be found. Then I heard saw the side door open, the dude who was over Titan's that day I popped up on him slipped in nearly unseen and I also noticed Titan sliding into his seat next to the administrators, Titan has a brief conversation with the principal and then turned his attention to the keynote speaker who was finally starting to wrap up his twenty-minute long speech. Once he finished they introduced Titan and I listened intently to every word, watching the crowd shift nervously as Titan talked about black empowerment, taking back the country WE built, and not allowing our history and culture be whitewash.... I could tell he struck a nerve because behind him the principal was whispering with a scowl on her face but Titan's speech riled up the crowd and I couldn't have been more proud because this was exactly what I expected from him.
"You were cutting it kinda close weren't you?" I asked walking over to Titan and his mother, she gave me an annoyed look before walking off, how could someone wearing such a happy shade of purple look so mean? "Let me guess... your boy's girl is still trippin and you needed to give him another pep talk?" I asked slyly and I could tell by Titan's face that he knew what I was getting at.
"Yeah... something like that, so wassup? I didn't think you were going to be able to make it considering everything that you got going on?" Titan asked trying to steer the conversation away from what him and his boy were doing that caused them to be late.
"I told you, I'd be here so you really shouldn't be surprised.... as for that other shyt, it's still kinda early so I don't think there's going to be too much movement before noon...." I said knowing that if I were Renee this would be the perfect time to strike when you least suspected it. "So the park I got, I rented out for the whole day.... I got about ten different food trucks that y'all can hit up, everything is paid for y'all eat for free if y'all show y'alls diplomas and I got a performance planned for later tonight." I said looking at him but his eyes kept shifting to my right, I followed his gaze and saw his 'boy' hugged up with some girl, but there was a moment where their eyes connected.
"Preciate it big bro..... so where's my gift?" Titan asked smiling and I shrugged, knowing that I had something special for him a little later.
"In all seriousness though... go have some fun, enjoy your day. I got some business I need to handle and then I'll probably stop by and see if I got something for you..... but before I go, I gotta ask, why Texas Southern?" I asked looking at him.
"I liked what they had to offer, I knew since you forced me to read all those damn Hotep books that I wanted to go to an HBCU, and Houston just felt like home to me...... I'm a little nervous because I don't really know anyone down there but that's all part of the experience right?" Titan asked and I couldn't say because college was the last thing on my mind when I graduated.
"Well my little cousin Zyn will be going to the University of Houston, you know him right?" I asked and Titan nodded. "Plus my cousin Tion is down there and he's always had a soft spot for football players, so if you need a mentor or anything I'm sure he'll be more than happy to take you under his wing...." I said but Titan's eyes drifted back to his boy and now the dude was arguing with his girl. "Aight I'll hit you up when I'm on my way to the park, go up there have a good time and we'll talk a little later....." I said dapping him up and hugging him. "I'm proud of you bro." I said. I noticed Titan's mom watching me with disdain in her eyes, but I knew she was going to hold her tongue because her resentment wasn't towards me but towards....... Yaseem walked in, he blended in with all the parents in his crisp suit and shiny shoes.
