Chapter Forty-Five: Bubbles Galore.
My chest hurt as I sucked in deep breaths, my hands rested on my knees as I was double over. I probably should have done more practise, or kept my fitness up before coming back here. Sweat clung to the back of my neck, and made my hair feel damp. Stacey was next to me, breathing heavily, but not as bad as I was. Damien paced in front of us, like some sort of war commander. He gave me a dirty look, still holding the night of the recital against me. The main thing missing here, was Isabel not being by my side.
"You girls have gotten sloppy. I thought you were all serious about what you do. Serious enough to keep training hard whilst we were on break. Kelly, you were fantastic and clearly the only one who even attempted to train whilst in holidays." Kelly stuck her nose a little in the air, taking the comments straight to her head clearly, and acting in a snobbish fashion. She send a sneering smile at the rest of us. I heard Stacey mutter something under her breath, and half of the words started with 'f' I'm pretty sure.
"I especially expected better, because we have a very important event coming up in four months time." That perked all our interests, apart of me wanting him to skip the dramatic and get to the point. I wanted to go home and take a bubble bath. He stopped pacing, giving us a serious look.
"In four months time, we will be performing, and competing, against some of the best dance company's in California. But, apart from the fact I want you girls to prove that Damien's Dance Company is not only the best in the state, there will be a dance scout from LA." Half the girls gasped, and excited whispers broke out along the line. Their voices mixed together like some sort of teenaged movie. I glanced at Stacey and she raised her eyebrows at me, smiling widely. Her eyes were practically saying, 'congratulations, you're going to LA.' I suddenly felt panicked as Damien continued. My eyes slid to the floor, not daring to look at my teacher as my mind started whirring.
"Now, this scout is looking to take five girls with him. I was really hoping all five of them will be under my name. I don't think most of you are ready. So, I may let slip if all five spots are not for my girls. But, if at least one of you does not get one of those spots. I may just need to cut some off the team." The entire room went deadly quiet. All the excited whispers had evaporated. My eyes slowly slid up, and I realised Damien was giving me a severe look, that made me want to cower. Instead, I held his stare back, making myself stand straight, keeping my face completely neutral, emotionless. His eyes narrowed the tiniest bit, before he turned and continued pacing.
"So, I hope you girls practise out of class, and practise extra hard whilst in class. I know I'm telling you rather early, because I want you all to be ready, so my dream of having all five spots will come true. I'll see you all on Sunday." He spoke, before waving his hand, dismissing us. The excited chatter started again as I felt dread creep up my throat. I moved straight towards my bag, pulling out a hoodie, that actually belonged to Vic, and tugged it over my head. I slid my bag onto my shoulder, as Stacey sat next to me, gathering up her own things, but was also finishing some final stretches.
"It must suck, y'know, just moving in with your boyfriend, and then you may have to move up to LA." She said vaguely, sliding her eyes up to mine, a small sly smile creeping on her face. I frowned a little at her. She had changed since I had last seen her. The obvious start was her now dark brown hair, compared her old bright blonde hair. It made her blue eyes stick out a bit, yet even her attitude had changed. She wasn't really acting like the over the top high schooler anymore, she was kinda hard now. A lot more blunt towards thing. Yet, I didn't feel close enough to ask her what had happened to her.
"Who says I'll make it to LA." She snorted, shaking her head at me, and went back to focusing on stretching. I stood for a minute, not sure what I should stay. I couldn't decided whether I liked this version of Stacey or not. She then looked up, giving me a half smile.
