Chapter Fifty: It's All For You

"Wait, wait, I don't wanna sound insensitive, but didn't grandpa pass away. If he was ok, what happened?" Anna gave me a curious look. I looked down at my hands, giving up a rye smile.

"Well, you see, sometimes life prefers to play games with you, it likes to bring you up before crashing you down. It's the same as being thrown into a lake, as soon as you get used to the warm sun, your breath is taken away by icy water." I looked up at her and she was giving me a cheeky grin.

"That was very metaphorical of you. Maybe you should have been a writer." I let out a dry chuckle, shaking my head.

"I'll leave the dramatic writing to your father, I rather like being a vocal teacher thank you very much." Anna smiled, crinkling her nose. She then frowned.

"Well, if that wasn't the moment you lost grandpa, how did it happen." I sighed, being brought into a slightly somber mood, letting my mind go back to that unbearable time. I looked at Anna. She reached out, placing her hand on mine, giving it a light squeeze. She gave me a reassuring smile. Sometimes, I feel like she's always the one that comforts me. That she was the one that looked after me, not me after her.

"How about I skip a couple of weeks, get us through the story a little faster, you're nearly up to date with it." Anna gave me an eager look, sitting back, and resting against her wall. I cleared my throat a little, realising it was a little bit tight as I spoke, before I continued on with my story.

I sat in the food court of the mall, tapping my fingers on the table impatiently. My phone sat on the table, taunting me a little as I stared at it. Why won't you just ring please. I sighed, letting my eyes wonder around the crowded food court. I started people watching, seeing a bunch of teenagers in a big group, laughing loudly and I saw a girl around their age, by herself, watching them with a terrified look. I bet if she was with a group she wouldn't look intimidated like she is now. Or if that was only one of two other teenagers, but I can totally see why she's intimidated, I probably would be too. My eyes also came across a young girl swinging off her dads arm, and he swung the giggling girl into the air. It made me think of my own dad, and I smiled. He only just got out of hospital, a week and a half later, and was resting at home, recovering from his successful treatments. He still had to get check regularly for a while, but he'll be ok. It was weird seeing him bald. He obviously had his head shaved so they could preform the surgery easily. He now has a pretty wicked scar at the front of his head. Suddenly my phone when off on the table, and I nearly jumped two feet into the air. I slammed my hand on the table, hastily scooping it up. I flipped it open, holding it to my ear.

"Hello?" I breathed into it.

"Hi love, how are you?" Viv's warm voice replied.

"I'm good thank you, how are you?"

"I'm lovely. What's the problem, dear?" She asked. I sighed loudly, tapping my fingers again.

"Well, I need help, because I can't figure out what to get for your sons birthday tomorrow. I'm at the mall and I'm completely stumped." I heard Viv hum as she thought herself. I nibbled on my bottom lip, waiting for her reply. I wasn't lying. I think I'd gone all out for his Christmas present, meaning I had absolutely no idea what to get for his birthday.

"I assume your present may be different from mine, considering I'm his mother and you're his girlfriend." I felt my cheeks flare with heat, trying to ignore what she was possibly implying.

"He's pretty hard to buy for, even when he was a child. He was never really a needy child, and was vague when I asked him." She said factually. I rolled my eyes, chuckling a little.
