Chapter Thirty: Bright Lights

"Ugh, this is so boring." Naomi complained loudly, hanging her head of Anna's bed. Anna sat up, poking Naomi exposed belly, making her squeal.

"Well, if you're bored, you don't have to listen." She said in a baby voice, now tickling Naomi, as she screamed, and rolled off the bed with a thud.

"Annalise, do not hurt your sister." I said sternly, as Naomi laid face down in the carpet, making groaning noises.

"Baby, you alright." She pulled herself up, sighing, rubbing her face. She turned, scowling at Anna. She poked her tongue out at her, and Anna copied her right back.

"Yes mom, I'm fine. I'm gonna go play with Charlie out the back." She huffed, getting up from the ground.

"Make sure you don't tease him too much, I don't want him to bite you. Try not to kick the soccerball over the fence again, you nearly broke Travis's window the other day." She waved her hand at me. I sighed watching as she walked off. I turned to my 17 year old daughter.

"You absolutely promise you will help me through the teenage years." Anna giggled, nodding.

"I'll be her second mother through it all. Y'know, I think I had ok teenage years. Well, till now." She mumble the last part, looking down at her hands. I reached forward, lightly cupping her cheek.

"Honey, boys do this a lot. Are you certain Jacob was just using you? Maybe he had a reason?" Anna gave me a strange look.

"You're defending him?" She asked, disbelieving. I scoffed.

"No, god no, I wanna rip off his balls for even thinking about hurting my baby, but it's best to know the whole situation before you get upset." Anna considered it, before nodding slightly.

"See it would be like that, y'know, if he didn't say, 'hey that was great, Michelle was better. We had a nice time but its over now.', well along those lines, and then leaves." Anna wasn't upset, I can tell she was furious. I felt furious. Who the fuck does this guy think he is. I placed my hand on her knee.

"I give you every right to go up, and kick him straight in the balls. If you get suspended, I will high five you. I don't know how Vic would deal, I'm sure I'll make him understand." That earned a laugh from her.

"Now, we were getting to all the mushy stuff. Did he really say all that stuff?" I grinned widely, nodding.

"Your father is a huge romantic. Sometimes it makes me sick, but seriously, it's the best." I can assure you, there is definitely a part of me that believes I am still young. Yes, I'm an 40 year old woman who raves like a 16 year old. Let me have my moment.

"I hope I find somebody like that, not like the stupid, backstabbing, low life bastard." She spoke bitterly through gritted teeth.

"You will, don't worry, you will. Love is always meant to break you, true love is the thing that fixes it." Anna rolled her eyes at me.

"You picked up corniness from dad." I laughed.

"Of corse, you always pick up trait from your best friends." Anna made and awing sound, moving closer.

"Tell me the rest of your story, please." I softly flattened her crazy chestnut curls.

"It's about to get a little interesting."

I stood leaning towards the mirror, applying lipstick. It was a bright red, and stood out against my pale features. It was the only bright colour in my entire costume. I had my solo first up, then I was apart of two group performances. It kinda adorable watching all the really young girls who are apart of the junior classes stare at us older girls in awe, as if we are some sort of special unicorn. I guess us guesting at their cute recital was why. They tried to copying us whilst we put on make up, and copy our dance moves. I obviously told Vic to arrive later, so he doesn't have to sit through all the juniors and then all of ours. My outfit was simply. A leotard covered in a soft see through fabric that flowed around my entire body. The good thing about the dance being contemporary, is no shoes.
