The next morning,
The next morning, Jennie left early for work, a heavy weight in her chest from the previous night's events. She arrived at the office and immediately immersed herself in her work, hoping the busy schedule would distract her from her turmoil. She skipped breakfast, her appetite completely gone for the first time in ages.
After answering all her emails, Jennie leaned back in her chair, removing her glasses to rub her swollen eyes. She checked her phone, contemplating standing up when her stomach growled loudly, a stark reminder of her skipped meal.
(Knock, knock!)
Jennie’s eyes darted to the door as it opened, revealing a man who entered with a deep, respectful bow. "Confirmed, Ms. Kim," he said, extending an envelope towards her.
Jennie paused, her gaze fixed on the envelope before reluctantly taking it from him. She nodded her thanks and dismissed him, her heart sinking as she placed the envelope on her desk. The weight of its potential contents loomed over her, a dark cloud of foreboding. Steeling herself, she tore open the envelope, the sense of dread intensifying.
Photographs spilled out, cascading across her desk in a disorganized flurry. With trembling hands, Jennie picked up the first photo and gasped. Image after image revealed Lisa and Han So-hee in intimate embraces, their passion captured in stark, undeniable clarity. Each photo was a knife to Jennie’s heart, her tears splashing onto the glossy surfaces as she flipped through them in shock and disbelief.
The betrayal was overwhelming. Jennie choked back sobs, her breath hitching as she tried to process the gut-wrenching scene laid out before her. Hastily, she gathered the photographs and shoved them back into the envelope, a futile attempt to contain the emotional tidal wave.
She stood and moved to the window, the cityscape outside offering no solace. Her mind was a whirlwind of agony and confusion, the images of Lisa and Han So-hee replaying relentlessly. The once familiar office now felt alien, the betrayal altering everything in her world.
Just then, the door burst open with a force that jolted Jennie from her thoughts. She spun around, hastily wiping her tears and adopting a facade of composure. Standing before her was Han So-hee, her face twisted with rage.
"I'm sorry, Ms. Kim. I tried to stop her, but she wouldn't listen to me," explained her secretary, looking flustered.
Jennie dismissed her secretary with a nod. "It's fine. Leave us."
As soon as the door closed, Han Soo Hee strode forward and slapped Jennie hard across the face. The sting burned through Jennie's cheek, and she stumbled back, her vision blurring with shock and pain. Han Soo Hee's hand remained raised, her delicate face twisted into a mocking smile.
"Jennie Kim, this slap is my way of thanking you for taking care of Lisa for me for less than a year," Han Soo Hee said, her voice soft and gentle, but dripping with sarcasm.
Jennie’s heart pounded in her chest. She struggled to maintain her composure, her hand gripping her desk tightly, her knuckles turning white.
"I know, you already know the truth! How dare you to spy me? Are you that desperate for Lisa?" Han Soo Hee's words cut through Jennie like a knife, leaving her defenseless.
Jennie’s mind raced. The envelope with the photos lay on her desk, a silent testament to her desperate search for the truth. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. Han Soo Hee's presence was suffocating, her smug demeanor making Jennie feel small and powerless.
"You have no right to investigate me, Jennie. I could sue you for what you did, but I won't," Han Soo Hee continued, her voice low and menacing. "You still have nothing against me, I will win."
