Our Final Defeat
It began in the fateful year of 1066
It is nailed into the heart of every Englishman, of Anglo-Saxon descent
It was just another period of sycophants and wannabe kings
By right of succession, the crown should have passed to a Norman Baron
But through family treachery, he was usurped
Supported by a Norwegian King, an army invaded England
It took many a twist and turn, most famously the Battle of Hastings
But by the end leaders from both sides lay dead
As did six thousand brave English and Norman soldiers
All because of one man's greed, and after nearly a thousand years, little has changed
Since William the Conqueror, we have witnessed the rise and fall of a British Empire
But once again, the greedy, see profit in us being an island
When will they learn, to share what wonders the earth has to offer and let us live together in peace and harmony
Footnote:
I don't grieve for a past we never had, that defeat made us who and what we are.
So, I'm proud to be English, I'm proud to be British, and I'm proud to be European, but the sixty-million-dollar question is, am I proud to be human?
This is a completely different question, that I'm finding, increasingly difficult to answer honestly.
