26. Into the Chamber

After my last class of the day I went to meet Harry and Ron so we could go to the hospital wing and visit Hermione

"There's no point in talking to a petrified person. She won't hear a word you're saying." Pomfrey with a frown on her face

"We know that, Madam Pomfrey. It's  just, well, you see, we thought, maybe, we could... be with her for a bit. She's our... friend, you see, and... even if she can't hear us... I mean, it can't hurt, can it?" Ron asked shifting awkwardly

"Very well then. But be quick about it." She nodded with a sympathetic look in her eyes before going to her office

We walked over to sit around Hermione's bed as Ron grabbed the get well card Lockhart made for her

"You don't think Lockhart could be the heir of Slytherin, do you?" Ron joked with a hint of seriousness in his voice as Harry shock him a confused look

"Right. Forget I said it." He mumbled

"Wish you were here, Hermione. We need you. Now more than ever..." Harry sighed sadly, studying Hermione's face. As I held the mirror Hermione and Penelope was found with in my hands as it reflected the light around the room.

"What is that?" Ron asked and I looked over at him.

"The mir-"

"No, in her hand. Look." He said pointing at her hand as the light from the sun reflected from the mirror to her hand.

"I think it's a piece of paper." I said confused as Ron carefully pulled it from her stone like grip.

The three of us stood in an alcove of the corridor as Ron unfolded the paper he'd taken from Hermione, it appeared to be a page torn from a book.

"Of the many fearsome beasts that roam our land, none is more deadly than the Basilisk. Capable of living for hundreds of years, instant death awaits any who meet this giant serpent's eye. Spiders flee before it and only the crowing of the rooster can kill it." I read looking up when Ron gasped

"This is it! The monster in the Chamber of Secrets is a Basilisk. That's why Harry can hear it speak. It's a snake." He explained and I nodded

"It definitely makes sense."

"But it kills by looking people in the eye. Why is it no one's dead?" Harry questioned as we all shared a look when I saw Ron's reflection in the window

"Because no one did look it in the
eye. Not directly at least... Colin saw it through his camera. Justin, Justin must've seen the Basilisk through Nearly Headless Nick! Nick got the full blast of it, but he's a ghost, he couldn't die again...And Mione and Penny... had the mirror! I bet you anything they were using it to look round corners, in case it came along." I explained
